I would suggest going to montgomery if you want steak and seafood and skipping this place altogether.
My family and I visited Fantail Seafood & Steakhouse last night for my mother’s birthday and my birthday on 1/13/23. The visit started off pretty well, our server was great, the live music was good, and the hush puppies and appetizers were good.
This is where the good ended for most of us. The first thing to arrive was my step dad’s coleslaw. It arrived more than 20 minutes before his entree and other side item. Our entrees finally started coming out. My sister-in-law and I both were served see through, RAW shrimp. I sent mine back to be cooked as it was cold and raw. They brought it back still cold and still raw. My sister-in-law asked it to be removed from the table and asked to not have it replaced or cooked more. They refused to remove the raw shrimp.
My younger brother ordered chicken Alfredo and was served rancid chicken. He enjoyed the noodles and sauce, but the chicken… One bite and he nearly vomited, my other brother tried it as well and agreed, it wasn’t seasoning, it was rotten. I smelled it and it was so awfully pungent it made me gag. He stopped eating the whole thing for fear of becoming sick.
My 9 year old’s food was never cooked. The cook ( who we later found out was the manager) skipped over it. They told us it would take 7 minutes to cook when they dropped our food off. She ended up getting her food at the same time we got the check, nearly 40 minutes after everyone else received their meals.
We brought each of these issues to our server’s attention. He apparently got the manager because a man in a restaurant t-shirt came over to the table in a rush and angrily asked “someone wanted to talk to me?!” We had no idea who he was. My mom said we hadn’t asked to speak to anyone and I made the assumption that he was the manager even though he made no introduction and acted like we were the greatest inconvenience of his life. I tried to explain the issues we had and he told me “it’s jumbo RED shrimp. It HAS to be see through to not be rubbery”. He was so condescending. He then tells my younger brother that he must have never had a “TRUE chargrilled chicken” because that is what it’s supposed to taste like.
I tried to tell him I had eaten red shrimp elsewhere and even cooked it in my home and it is never rubbery, but ALWAYS cooked through. He hollered at me “I’m not going to argue with you!!” And stormed away. Our poor server said other tables were having the same issues and apologized a lot. They took off $11 from our ticket. ELEVEN DOLLARS. He refused to acknowledge the issues, apologize, or even cook the food how we preferred it. For reference, we had a table of 9, a $400+ bill with a mandatory 30% gratuity added to that. We arrived 10 minutes after they opened at 4:40pm and left at 6:30 pm. We had 1 full meal ( nearly $30 price) inedible, and half of two other meals (again, nearly $35 in price each) partly inedible. I do not know the “manager”’s name because he never bothered to...
Read moreWe recently visited what used to be called The Fantail but is now Epicure & Jack's Tavern. The decorations are still those of a kitchy seafood restaurant, though seafood is now just a part of their menu. Previously an all you can eat buffet, they are now an ala carte sit down restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. It was a Monday night so they weren't busy but a large boisterous party who were already a few drinks ahead were commanding a lot of attention. The menu had a variety of offerings from seafood to pasta to steaks. If you are looking for an inexpensive option, you'll have to stick to the appetizers as most entrees start at $25. The steaks go for between $30 and $80, though the portion would suggest it is for two. (the description describes that it is intended for two). Don't expect that your entree will be accompanied with a salad or sides, as each is priced separately. You do receive some tasty hush puppies but found they could have been warmer. We each ordered an entree, seafood specifically, as that was why we came, and though we are not at the coast, we are close enough that at these prices you might expect the seafood to be more fresh. It is possible that we we a day too soon as they were out of a few items on their menu. I got the low country boil and though it was as described as for two, the offerings suggested otherwise. I was surprised that I received what was probably a pound of shrimp, which I expected, but was told I was given extra because they were out of clams. A dozen claws was supposed to come with it. Later I was told there were clams so they brought me some. I received only two pieces of corn, sausage, and two halves of a small red potato to accompany the highly seasoned shrimp. The shrimp was cooked well, though the clams were a bit over cooked and tough. We found the entire night okay but not exceptional and though it won't be on the regular rotation, we may visit again. Our bill came to just under $100 for the three of us, an expensive night for a less than memorable meal. The others described their dinner as good but not quite equal...
Read moreThis restaurant is phenomenal!! The atmosphere and service are top notch! All of the staff are friendly, attentive, and they go above and beyond to ensure a memorable dining experience.
The aesthetics of the restaurant inside and out are very pleasing. Everytime I go in I see something new I didn't see last time. Feels warm and welcoming like being at home, but with a 5 star classy restaurant. There is art everywhere. No other place like it around the area!!
Now lets talk about the drinks! Epicure and jacks tavern are fantastic when it comes to a wide variety of drinks on the menu. My go to has been there old fashioned. They have great selection of spirits on the menu. I occasionally will try 1 or 2 of there huge selection of on tap options. They have over 50 options and are always getting in something new. There is literally something here for everyone. They also have a wonderful selection of wine. Every bartender I've encountered so far is knowledgeable and friendly. They make your drinks with a smiling face and even hold a conversation with you when they are busy! Very pleased with the service from behind the bar!!
Let's get to the menu and things I've tried in the past 2-3 months. Everything I'm about to list has been great. I always leave full because the portions are excellent for the price.
Apps : Bavarian pretzels w/ beer cheese, jumbo smoked wings (these are jumbo and delicious) could almost eat this as an entrées, pork rinds (all flavors are excellent), and a charcuterie board
Entrées: epicure style ribeye, NY strip (the compound butter really flavors the steaks well), shrimp skewers, chicken marsala, tortellini genovese, perkey breast chicken sandwich, the hog, Deluxe smash burger, and a shrimp po boy. I've also had there meat and 3 a few times and man is it excellent!!
Deserts are excellent as well!
All around this is my go to restaurant and tavern to take all my friends and family in the area. I eat here at least 1-2 times per week. Give them a try, you won't be...
