I would give them 5 stars, but I asked them for a Maxwell St Polish, and it had KETCHUP on it. WHO PUTS KETCHUP ON A MAXWELL ST POLISH? WHO PUTS KETCHUP ON ANYTHING "CHICAGO"?????? Chicago restaurants shouldnt even carry ketchup. Mild sauce goes on fries. BBQ sauce goes on burgers. Neon relish goes on hot dogs. I'm going to have a very firm chat about this next time I go in.
So I live in Madison, work in Milwaukee, and some nights I get done with work very late, after 10pm, after midnight even. Too late to wait until I get home to eat dinner, too late to wait until Madison to buy food. I've been looking for late night Milwaukee spots that arent Denny's, IHop, McDonalds, etc. I discovered Oakland Gyros and I love them, but they're quite a bit far off route. I found this place by accident, driving, and it might be my new spot. They are open until 3am every night!
It's a Chicago style takeout joint. If you dont know what that means-- no frills, bullet proof glass, rude staff, a huge, faded, partially handwritten menu with absolutely EVERYTHING imaginable, and everything comes with fries and a can of "pop". If you go in expecting a clean waiting area full of polite people, an easy to read menu, options that arent greasy, etc, you dont understand what this is about and you should go back to those nice restaurants in gentrified neighborhoods that put ketchup on everything.
Not only do Chicago restaurants have every random combination of items on the menu-- gyros? Italian food? Pizza? Corned beef? Seafood? Shwarma? Jerk? Cheeseburgers? Philly Cheesesteak? No problem!-- they will throw all of that s**t together on one sandwich. You want a beef sandwich AND an Italian sausage? Throw them on the same bun, call it a Combo. You want a gyro and a cheeseburger? Throw them on the same bun, call it a gyro burger! Then there's this one sandwich where they put ALL OF IT on a sub bun and call it a "gym shoe". Gyro meat, corned beef, steak, multiple cheeses, lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo, and sometimes tzatziki. You can also get hot peppers, sweet peppers, and mild sauce. I've stayed away because this just sounded like WAY TOO MUCH. But on my first visit to Chicago Sub, they told me this was their signature sandwich, and several waiting customers agreed.
And frankly, they do it right. I did NOT opt for any extra peppers or sauces and what is included on the sandwich seems like the right combination. The large sub came with fries and "pop" for around $10.
I also opted for the footlong Maxwell St Polish. See my first paragraph. other than that the flavor was ok. It didnt seem as fresh and juicy as the polishes from some places, but would have hit the spot if not for the ketchup.
I'm going to try a few other menu items and see how they hold up.
The poor woman working the counter seemed WORE OUT. It was very hot in there, and probably near the end of her shift. She was...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI went to this place in order food, the service was prompt and the food was very good. I'll definitely be visiting here more often, the menu was detailed and the cashier was very friendly oh, she made sure to get the order right and repeat it to you almost as fast as you placed it, the food was available it is in a well-lit location so you shouldn't have any problems finding it, the lobby was a little cold. But other than that it's a decent place if you want a variety of food options, I specifically have tried the Italian beef as well as the gyro and I was pleased with both of them. Definitely worth the while and the wait oh, so if you're looking for a decent place to try some good food I would definitely...
