I wanted to give this restaurant 5 stars but some of the staff and the quality and size of the dining area prevented me from doing so. 7 of us stopped in around 12:45 on 12/27/2019 for lunch. 2 tables immediately ajacent to the door were pulled together and would accommodate us. However the table was dirty and the plastic seats had dirt on them like they were used for standing on. I asked 2 people immediately behind the counter if I could get the tables and chairs cleaned. I was completely ignored. I actually said it loud enough that other diners looks at me when I said it. Normally I would have left but my out of town family was already ordering. We placed our order and I found a staff member and had him was the table and clean up the chairs. The food was pretty good. This restaurant started in 1933, obviously was a drive in style and now has the "old" walk up windows closed in which became the small dining area. Probably might accommodate about 30 people. The drive through seemed slower than most restaurants of that type. When I took the pictures, the drive through was empty. Further evidence of the age of the building, the restrooms are on the outside of the building. Each a "one holer". But clean, modern and handicap accessible.

Gilles is Milwaukee’s oldest frozen custard shop, so I was excited to finally stop in again during a custard run with my partner. We visited on a Friday night and the flavor of the day was lemon. The neon sign lit up nicely as we pulled in, and there was plenty of parking. It was busy, but the line moved quickly, and the staff at the counter were friendly and welcoming. We ordered a scoop of the lemon custard along with their specialty that month, curly fries. Unfortunately, both were disappointing. The custard tasted watery and lacked the dense, creamy texture you expect from frozen custard. It may have been a bad batch, but it didn’t compare well to other places. The curly fries were also bland, without the seasoned coating you’d expect from curly fries like Arby’s. Pricing is on the higher side. A three-scoop dish at Gilles costs $7.25, compared to $6.00 at Kopp’s and $4.15 at Oscar’s. With the custard’s texture off and the fries underwhelming, it felt like poor value for the price. That said, service was fast and friendly, and I’d be open to giving Gilles another try. With its long history, I want to believe this visit was just an off night.

Arrived at 7:55pm on 5/5 to find the small place pretty much packed. They had enough employees taking orders & cooking that orders were filled efficiently & fast. Within 6 minutes I received my order & it was correctly made & delivered hot. Neither the burger or the fries were greasy & the burger was cooked just to done, not overcooked & dried out. Choices for food & ice cream are Junior or Regular size. For desserts they have a frozen custard of the day, an assortment of sundaes, or you can make your own. Also, if this is your first time visiting, talk to the staff & you'll get a surprise. Many people complain about the cost of the food, but check out Culver's meals & dessert choices, & you'll notice the prices are similar & food looks more appetizing from Gilles. No flat burgers served here. Don't eat here often, but once in a while you need to treat yourself.

Perhaps the only sad thing about no longer eating animal products is that I'll never again eat at Gilles. Because I grew up a few blocks from Gilles, a huge part of my childhood was spent eating Gilles frozen custard, malts, and burgers. Those are very fond memories. Local bias may play into my views but I would take Gilles over any other frozen custard stand in the state. The frozen custard is amazing. If you've only ever had ice cream you'll be amazed (or should be) by how much better frozen custard is. Besides the amazing food, Gilles is a special place because it is one of the few remaining establishments that provides an experience. If you go there on a warm summer night you'll be there with people who just finished a baseball game or had been at the pool all day. There is a simple indoor area for ordering and there is a limited amount of seating. Most often you'll wait outside for your number to be called and then you'll return outside to eat your amazing food. There are a few tables outside but mostly people just stand or sit wherever there is room in the parking lot area. It is very informal. Other frozen custard stands are probably the only places anywhere that still provide this "old school" dining experience. It is an experience I wish I could duplicate around...

Honest to God review: I came with quite a large crew so I expected them to get my order wrong and they didn’t which was a surprise! Not too long of a wait and we found a nice large table to eat at outside. We came after leaving the zoo on Sunday around 5ish. We were outside eating and my daughter noticed a piece of brown hair inside her burger in which I advised her to go in and show them. She didn’t want another burger because she was understandably grossed out (she’s 16). She said they apologized and gave me a refund. A very nice team lead (I forgot her name) came out and apologized and said hair in food rarely ever happens and gave me five $1 off coupons for future use on top of my refund which I thought was a GREAT gesture. Caught me off guard and I believe she went above and beyond! Only problem is my son (who is clean cut) got to the bottom of his ice cream dish and was grossed out there was a piece of black curly hair in it as well. It was gross but I definitely wasn’t going back in to mention on fear of I didn’t want them thinking I was trying to one up them and get free stuff. We just kept quiet and left. I don’t think we’ll be using the coupons but I definitely think their were good people working there and still wish you great success and I understand...
