They ask people that come in for a meal to pay for their food order before they'll make it. Like they're fast food or a food cart! It was so weird and awkward.
That must be a fairly new policy, because Chris had never asked me to do that in the past.
But then, I was shown that it's not a real policy, because it's not enforced equally. A man that came in after me ordered food and wasn't asked to pay ahead. He was free to enjoy his food and beverage before being asked to pay, like normal. I asked why they wanted me to pay before I've ever even tasted a morsel of my lunch, and the answer was, "A lot of people order and then leave."
I fail to see how that's my problem.
If you have a policy regarding how you take payments, especially one that is highly unusual in restaurants, you must apply that policy equally to everyone, or scrap the policy and apply it to no one.
Being made to feel like I'm untrustworthy (will steal food cost from them) just because the employee doesn't recognize me as a "regular" is extremely unwelcoming & feels discriminatory.
So after 7 years of enjoying that delicious chicken bacon wrap (no tomatoes, sub olives) for lunch, I don't think I'll be returning to Heritage ever again. Spending money on going out to eat has become really difficult for most people, including me. Just look at all the restaurants in the Portland metro area closing permanently! I'll spend my precious few "going out" dollars somewhere that I'm treated like every other patron & am made to feel welcome.
Btw, paying ahead via debit meant I had to TIP ahead of time, too. I felt obligated to tip my usual 20%, because they still had to make my food! If I'd tipped badly, who knows how they'd handle my food order? That weird "policy" forces patrons into a very awkward position.
UPDATE: Brett, who I assume is a manager at Heritage Pub, reached out to me. He understood why I felt the way I did about my experience because he stated that it's not policy to ask for payment in full before the kitchen will make the order. I appreciated hearing that the employees were mistaken, instead of this being...

Read moreOne of the jewels on 82nd avenue. Dive-y just enough that I felt right at home. Huge bar with plenty of spaces to sit plus tables, Oregon lottery and pool tables and a solid food menu with weekly specials. Food was on point and reasonably priced. The best part? The drinks are priced even better - if you're happy with draft and well, you can get your fill here without spending much. Bartender Chris was friendly, attentive and funny. Not much else to wish for. I will be back!
Update: Not much has changed. I think they raised a few prices but nothing I noticed. The bartenders and cooks are still amazing and their weekly food specials are something to look out for. Still loving it! Also, Chris is having...
