I had an opportunity to visit The Breakfast Caffe off Rt 119 very recently while on vacation. I had the opportunity and pleasure to interact with Paris Frich, the head chef and owner of the establishment.
A quiet, cozy, warm atmosphere with a wonderful soundtrack wafting from the kitchen, this quaint local business deserves your time and attention if you're in the region. In particular if you have a gluten-free, vegan, or allergen-specific diet, as variants of nearly every dish have been crafted for these special dietary needs in addition to the regular "omnivore" version.
I'd like to call particular attention to the Smashbowl which I elected to have served with chorizo sausage. I requested it "extra crispy", as I like my potatoes to have some crunch for a breakfast dish. I also requested a side of sausage gravy and some of the hollandaise, both freshly prepared that morning. A divine combination, and an excellent way to start my morning. In particular, the use of buckwheat flour as the binding and thickening agent for the sausage gravy was outstanding. Ordinarily some combination of cornstarch or traditional flours' is what's referred to as the "traditional" modality of southern sausage gravy, but this was outstanding and gave it an earthy, sage-like quality that I was happily surprised by.
I'd also like to note the rest of the customers in this location at the time of my visit, ordering things such as Dutch Babies (which looked and smelled great), but also communicating their health needs which were not only respected, but anticipated by the menu before they arrived. Truly excellent customer service and consideration.
Also, special recognition of Ms. Trish, the front counter worked (and I suspect stern taskmaster that keeps the trains running on time and on the tracks), and Paris's significant other, "Mr Q", a military veteran and dedicated chef in his own right. The work ethic from all 3 of these individuals was stellar and deserves it's own paragraph.
TL;DR: It's worth the stop. If you're passing through Morgantown, and you want a quality breakfast, and ESPECIALLY if you're vegan/gluten/allergy restricted, they do a...
Read moreThe outside is very underwhelming, but I was glad I went in anyway. The inside was more reassuring although still lacking in charm. I was the only patron at 7am, but the employees seemed pleasant enough and offered efficient service.
The biscuits and gravy were fantastic. The sausage gravy was the perfect combination of flavors. I normally don't like biscuits; I just tolerate them. These were probably the best biscuits I've ever had and left me wishing I had room for more. However, I ordered my food to go and the heat of the biscuits melted the styrofoam to-go container into my biscuits which was definitely less than ideal. I never really understood why some places put a wax paper lining paper in a to go container until now, this restaurant may want to consider either that or upgraded to go containers.
The eggs benedict was....okay. If I'd only ordered that I would have been very disappointed. The flavor/seasoning of the eggs was great, but I wasn't even sure there was hollandaise sauce on it. Their "hollandaise" just looked like runny egg yolk in the bottom of the container. I'll post a photo. It looked (and tasted) like somebody mixed together some of ingredients of Hollandaise sauce but didn't actually whip it and cook it. "Watery and translucent" are not words I'd normally associate with hollandaise. So disappointed because I can tell based on the rest of the flavors that it would have been amazing had it actually been what it was supposed to be. Was definitely not worth $12.
Last disappointment: for breakfast cafe that advertises coffee in a sign in the window, only having the most basic drip coffee and still charging $4 is disappointing. I grabbed my food here and my coffee...
Read moreCalling all foodies the breakfast caffe is a hybrid of a charming eclectic breakfast bistro and pop up. The chorizo muffin is a fantastic value with lots of meat and the coffee refills are free. The coffee is $100 per two 10 lb bags. The coffee is top notch and a great value. The pop up food is phenomenal! The gluten free puff pastry is perfection. The caramels purr like silk and the tempered chocolate is glass. The reservation only dinner is a candlelit calming atmosphere and the food is better than manhattan. The pretzel biscuits made with butter better than any Irish butter and a superbly understated touch of baking soda are better than the south. The shepherds pie lamb is so soft and delicate the meat melts like butter in your mouth. And there's always something unexpected like wispy thin crispy sauteed cabbage that tastes better than roasted kale. The food is a treasure that people should experience. Eating at the breakfast caffe is like traveling to a time when people cared to give their best. When you dine it's like you're with family with every table talking to each other about how fantastic the food is. Better hurry because the chef is considering going on a world cooking tour so if you want to know what unfettered genius tastes like eat at the...
