This place has pretty good food but unfortunately, that's not the most memorable part of our visit. I'd recommend avoiding it if you're looking to have a pleasant day.
I came in here with my wife on our way through town - she had the catfish meal and I had the 2pc dark meat chicken meal. Roughly $30 for the two of us, including fountain drinks (more on that later). Using credit cards costs an extra fee, so we paid cash.
The food looked and smelled so good that even before we got our food, my wife and I commented that we think we'll be back. The wait was significant but not terribly long.
The catfish was good, and the chicken was great. Moist, crispy, buttery, and delicious.
The sides were good - great coleslaw and incredible sweet potato casserole. The green beans tasted canned but seasoned well with ham, and the fried okra was decent. Great hushpuppies.
Unfortunately, our positive experience was interrupted when an older man who worked there approached us and said something to the effect of "if you come here again, don't bring those in here" and just pointed at our table. Confused, we asked him what he meant. After a tense back and forth, we learned he was referring to a water bottle and mason jar we had brought and filled at their drink fountain to avoid using Styrofoam cups. We had paid for our drinks.
We avoid Styrofoam because 1) it's horrible for the environment as it does not decompose, and 2) chronic exposure to humans has been linked to cancer and other health problems. If they offered glasses, we would not care.
Regardless, the man said we can't bring our own vessels because he "doesn't know what people are drinking" and that "no outside food or drink is allowed" even though we brought no food or drink from outside, only containers, and the drinks were paid for. He didn't seem to want to listen to us, just to get the last word in. That he cares about it enough to interrupt our meal over it is ridiculous. We saved the establishment the cost of 2 Styrofoam cups, and were made to feel unwelcome as a result.
We definitely got the impression that he did not want us to come back, and we will oblige. While the food was good, it wasn't good enough to overcome the bad taste the experience...
Read moreWent thru the drive thru, and got stuck waiting in line to order because there is no order to station outside, you have to order at the window. Evidently the 2 cars in front of me had to wait on their order to be cooked, I ended up in line for 40 minutes and thought surely the restaurant would have caught up on having food ready to serve, but had to wait another 15 minutes for mine. Evidently they cook to order, (at least they were that day) so be prepared to wait. The girl at the window was very nice, but after I paid, the manager came up to her and asked her to see my order receipt. She was VERY hateful when she told her she didn't charge me correctly. After all that wait, the manager demanded that I pay another .10¢. This was all with the drive thru window open. It was really awkward for the girl to tell me that. I don't know if she didn't like that employee, or was pissed about something else, but it didn't seem like an appropriate way to treat her, esp in front of a customer. With all this, what we had was good, the baked beans were very good and the chicken was good, being it was freshly fried. I waited over 40 minutes, and have not and will not ever go back for the very fact of how the manager treated the employee and me...
Read moreOrdered two orders of fried green tomatoes. The sign said "9 for $3.99" and each order consisted of four slices of fried green tomato. A dollar per slice? No thanks.
The "Pulled Chicken BBQ Sandwich" was chicken cubes, not pulled/shredded barbecue. Pretty sure the sandwich contained more sauce than chicken, by weight.
I was examining the menu on my way out to verify that it had, in fact, claimed I was supposed to receive 125% more fried green tomatoes per-order, and one of the employees must have assumed I was staring at her because she greeted me with a rather condescending and certainly uninviting "hello, sir" rather than asking if I needed any assistance or enjoyed my meal.
Two stars because the food actually tasted quite good, so if you can ensure you're actually going to receive what you are paying for - and you'll definitely be paying well for it - you'll likely...
