Knowing we were taking my mom to the UP for a short trip I wanted to find something new and different. She's been wanting fish from the Great Lakes. It seems like anytime anyone serves fish from them it's always fried. Then I found reviews for Cap'n Ron. Everyone was raving about him. So we decided to visit his place. They were not wrong. First you see his little smoke shack, with the smoke coming from it, you can smell the scent of smoking fish wafting in the air. That gets your mouth watering. Then you walk up to the store, as you look around the outside and see the lake it's sitting right against. Then one fisherman comes outside to let you know that's a young swan floating around out there with the ducks. You're already trying to grasp that it felt like your GPS took you down a wrong road to get you here, when, sure enough you see a young, beautiful swan floating with the ducks. Even the fishermen at the business next door are snickering at this man's amazement, but it's endearing. You step inside the small shop, after Ron clears it that you're all one party since it's such close quarters inside. He begins to rattle off what he's got. I didn't hear half of it because I was taken by the beautiful beaded jewelry hanging on the wall made by his daughters. Some with porcupine quills! My husband catches me up while mom's placing her order. He stops her and says, "you need to try something first". Then he brings out the fish sausage I had already read about. I had already made up my mind I'd be brave and try it. I gave it a go. Oh my goodness. It is so good. My husband and I decided we needed to have some. Now I wish we would have gotten two. We would have loved to try the fish dip, but I have a milk allergy and didn't want to start wheezing and having trouble breathing just to see if the hype was true on that. Since the other was so true, I have to believe the dip/spread hype is true as well. We dined on smoked fish that night, and it was some of the best fish I have ever had. Better than nice restaurant fish. This was just a couple of days ago. Ron is very nice and talkative. He loves to tell you about his daughters, and their jewelry, and Native American dancing. I think he'd be a good one to have a cup of coffee with, and listen to his stories. Stop by his place and pet his dog, get some fish. You...
Read moreThis is a must if you are visiting the UP! I went here last year with my family and haven't been able to forget it about it since. The food is always fresh (and you can tell it is fresh), mouthwatering and appetizing! You get many condiments to pair with your food, including homemade, savory, coleslaw. Even Gordon Ramsey has came here and had nothing but compliments! There is a variety of food to choose from, so you will be able to enjoy something here even if you dislike seafood. I highly recommend this to everyone, you'll love it. This has been my favorite place to eat on vacation in the UP (maybe even the whole Michigan) and is the perfect place to grab food before or after sightseeing/hiking. Everyone who helped to take my order, prepare the food is extremely nice and makes you feel so welcomed. Even better, there is a golden retriever that greets you and keeps you company (if you dislike dogs, he will not bother you if you don't interact with him first). This place is right along the lake. Eating here was the highlight of my trip and I can't wait to come back.
Tip: If you enjoy seafood, I would highly recommend fried fish basket, the fish sandwiches, and the fried trout. The chicken strip basket is perfect for people who don't enjoy seafood. The french fries go well with everything! The complimentary coleslaw is perfect for dipping seafood,...
Read moreWe went out for the Pictured Rocks cruise and were told this was the best white fish in the city and I would 100% agree with that. A little ways out of town but this place is a hidden gem. We ordered white fish dip and two five piece white fish baskets.
There was a sign on the window saying they only take cash but their card reader was working yesterday when we came!
We had to wait about 5-10 minutes because they had to grab more fish from the dock. Totally worth the wait! The white fish dip was the best I’ve had in all the summers we’ve visited Michigan and the fried pita that came with it to dip was super warm and delicious. There is a little fridge you can buy some coke products and water.
The baskets were also incredible, fresh and hot! Best white fish we’ve had and the sauce, fries & coleslaw were all perfect additives! Everyone was super kind and kept us up to date on if they were getting more fish.
We sat on picnic tables next to the food truck and enjoyed the beautiful weather. We went around 1500 and there was a decent line after we got there so I would guess this place stays busy! We will 100%...
