An unpretentious building that has character and is home world-class barbeque. Slick Pig BBQ in Murfreesboro checks all the right boxes. The barbeque here is prepared in traditional wood smokers rather than the electric indoor smoker oven many restaurants use today.
The BBQ here has beautiful bark, amazing smoke rings and tender, juicy meat packed with flavor that I would pit against barbeque anywhere. Matt leads a dedicated team, some of whom have been at Slick Pig for many years. Inside you’ll find an open floor plan with great seating options, friendly staff, and that classic heavenly smell synonymous with great BBQ joints.
We ordered a full rack of ribs, smoked wings, pulled pork sandwich, mac and cheese, fried okra, fried pickles, potato salad, hush puppies. We’ll start with something that usually doesn’t make you sit back in your seat and say “Whoa, this is terrific!”. That item is the potato salad. With a flavor profile that is surprisingly complex and a perfect texture, I can truly say, this is the best potato salad I’ve ever eaten…period.
The ribs had beautiful bark and that classic smoke ring and were packed with flavor, both tender and juicy and cooked to perfection. The combination of perfectly cooked meat that you can pull off the bone in chunks delivers eye-rolling and deliciousness that’s next-level. The smoked wings were packed with rich flavor as well. Keep in mind, these are not crispy-fried wings, they are smoked wings that are both tender and juicy. The pulled pork was delicious as well however, the ribs steal the show. Fried okra and fried pickles are perfect. Hushpuppies are perfectly tender and moist inside.
I like to provide honest reviews and to that point, we get to the mac and cheese. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad, it’s just missing that magic that everything else has. If Matt could get some of that magic from the potato salad over into the mac and cheese, there would be no item we’ve tried to date that is less than stellar! We wrapped up our trip with plenty of leftovers and grabbed some pecan pie and chess pie, both of which were great! One unique item you have to try are the fresh Pork Rinds! OMG! These are fabulous! They have two varieties, traditional plain salted and smokehouse. Both are great!
Those leftovers – place them in a shallow baking pan into a preheated oven at 275 degrees for 10-12 minutes and they are every bit as delicious as when you first ordered them!

Fall off the bone ribs. Cooked to perfection. The wings are out of this world. Smoked perfectly and still juicy on the inside. Very well done.
The potato salad is some of my favorite. The Mac n cheese is super cheesy and runny. All of the sides feel like they've been crafted with local town TLC even tho they are your regular BBQ joint sides. I'm not a fan of beans (except baked beans), yet the white beans at Slick are actually tasty in my book. Not too chalky and with the right amount of salt. Maybe even a little too salty for some but it works for me. Yum.
My wife loves the banana pudding and i think the coconut cream cake is perfection. Fluffy cake with a huge helping of flaky coconut sitting on sweet coconut cream drizzle on the bottom. So so delicious.
Slick Pig does a lot right.
I've lived in the Boro my whole life. Born in '86, I was around for a bit before Slick slid into town. I remember way back in the day, after baseball games, we would hit up Slick Pig or Sir Pizza.
In high school, my best friend played rugby, and after games we would hit up some Slick Pig.
I rented my first house during college on the Slick Pig side of town. Ended up buying my first house on that side of town as well with my wife.
We eventually moved to the Church Street side of town towards Shelbyville and we haven't been to Slick Pig in almost 7 years! I can't believe it's been that long.
Well, I recently Door Dashed some Slick and IT IS STILL just as delicious as I remember. I love having Slick Pig in our home town. Truly is some of the best BBQ in town.
Minor gripes bc no place is perfect..
My wife says the chicken salad is too onion-y. But I personally love it.
I wish the blue cheese dressing was chunkier.
I wish the pork sandwiches were shredded more. Most times when you take a bite, it's just a huge chunk of meat which can be dry in the middle. Some people may enjoy that. I prefer mine shredded more. Still a damn good sammie.
No place will cater to your every whim. Slick Pig is so dang close to perfection that you have to nitpick a few things.
Slick Pig deserves a lot of praise. I need to go check out the remodel they did back in 2016.
Keep doing what...
Read moreOmg....this is the best bbq we've had since moving from MS! My husband and I had been trying to come here for dinner and kept missing them. Today we were in the area and stopped in. Unbeknownst to us they do daily specials and we caught them on all you can eat catfish night. My husband got that, and a 5 piece smoked wings. I ordered the bbq nachos (please excuse my pict, started eating before I remembered to take one). The wings were cooked perfectly. They offer ranch or blue cheese for dipping but you don't need it. The dips accent them but they're perfectly delicious solo. Nachos were full of brisket and delicious, portion large enough for 2. Best catfish we've had here, flavor took us back home. Served piping hot buffet style if you get the all you can eat. It also comes with apple or blackberry cobbler. Both were delicious and piping hot. We will definitely be back. Ms. Nicole and Mr. Benny were a joy to watch in the dining area. It's rare to see people enjoying their work but these two definitely love what they do and it shows! My cashier, a light skinned young lady wearing glasses and a ponytail was super sweet and friendly but I didn't get her name. Great establishment, friendly staff. KUDOS to the Slick...
