I’m not from Nashville but the last time I visited I discovered Southern Grist and loved it! So this trip I made sure to stop by. They had a private event that was going to close the facility 30 minutes after my arrival time. They still let me in and just told me of the early closing, ok fair enough 30 minutes is plenty of time to get a small pour and maybe try something new since I live far from here. Took forever for them to even get to me at the bar and when they did I asked for just a small pour or mini flight, something fast right? He said no. So I said ok well could I get a sample or two so that I know which cans to go I would like to purchase on my way out? That way I just get a sample and grab a can and leave (Mind you I still have 20 minutes until they closed for the event, which is a drinking event so it’s not like they were closing all the taps down like they do at night). The bartender was very rude and gave me a harsh look saying no he’s been instructed to stop pouring, not even a tiny sample so I could get a TO-GO BEER CAN and LEAVE! A sample takes 2 milliseconds to pour and I would’ve been on my way with still 20 minutes for them to spare! Not to mention the patio and some of the inside area were still FULL of people finishing their tabs so I was definitely not the only one there that they were waiting on for closing for the event, those people would take far more time to finish and leave by closing than me getting a sample would have taken!!!! There was no need to deny a quick sample or to be short and rude about it. Thanks for the complete disappointment, I’ll be sure to tell everyone don’t bother going to the brewery, there are others that are nicer to their...

I don't know if it was a bad day or just b-squad working Monday but I had a male bartender with a bad attitude over a simple question. I asked him what the difference was between two of their NEIPAs and he said " ugh, besides the hops and everything else about it ?... there's blah blah ..." I kinda zoned out and looked at my friend to be like " it's not just me who thinks this is an unprofessional and unfriendly response, right? Luckily I'm in my 40s and don't really bother entertaining confrontation anymore. I'm not a brew master and I'm certainly not dissecting hops at 6PM on a Monday after working. I just wanted someone to help me choose between two good hazy IPAs. Unfortunately this dude wasn't that person. We saw a couple leave the bar shortly after my experience and I'm not sure if it's because they overheard this unpleasant experience , or if they got tired of being asked what they wanted every 13 seconds by bartenders who weren't communicating to each other. My friend and I could tell he was overcompensating because he started being overtly friendly to everyone else after the fact. I wish he was mature enough , and the service industry in general was mature enough, to come up to people after bad service and attitude and just say " my bad" . Maybe it's tourist fatigue, maybe it's the growing pretentiousness but i dnk,...

The next stop on the summer road trip? @southerngristbrewing brewing in Nashville! This is a brewery whose beers @bigrayinba and I have reviewed on our podcast and we wanted to drop in to see the place, say hi, and Ray wanted a few of their new beers.

It was early afternoon, so not a lot of folks hanging out. However, a couple of folks enjoying some beer shared how much they love this brewery.  The staff were nice and friendly and the space was super clean and hip. They variety of beer in cans and on tap = wow.

Southern Grist opened their doors in February of 2016 staffed by the three founders and their wives. On their Two Year Anniversary, they opened a second taproom and 9,900 square foot production space in The Nations neighborhood, allowing for a massive production increase in just two years! Today, with over 50 employees and over 1,000 unique beers, their future is exciting.

Addresses Location 1: 754 Douglas Ave Nashville, TN 37207

Location 2: 5012 Centennial Blvd Nashville, TN 37209

Stay tuned for more road trip shenanigans....

We dropped in after a run to grab a drink and a snack. Southern Grist has some amazing sour beers --one of the very few types of beer I drink (and I love all of the ones I've tried from them). We decided on the sourdough focaccia with whipped feta and strawberry jam for a snack and got the Russo (aka creamy tomato basil sauce) as well. We were at a bar, so kinda expected a rewarmed stale bread and some ok toppings... What we got was INSANE. Fresh baked, oven-warm, fluffy crumb focaccia and toppings that belong in a three star restaurant... We liked the snack so much, we stayed for dinner. I got the burger--absolutely every component of which was perfection. Juicy meat.... Light, fluffy, buttery, but sturdy bun... Fresh, crispy pickles... If you don't usually like beer, stop by. If you want good food, stop by. If you usually like beer, stop by. In short, stop by.
