VEGETARIANS AND MEDITERRANEAN EATERS BEWARE!
I live in the neighborhood and was very happy to finally stop in at a time when I got a spot in the shade to park and there wasn’t a long line at the window for Ordering.
The young woman at the window was unfriendly and unhelpful. I ordered one taco that was rather disgusting and one which Was exceptionally good. I gave it a three since that averages the two. However, if I had added in my nasty tasting beverage and the poor window service, it would’ve taken it down ant least Another Star.
First with the good… I had a fried Avocado taco, which was really tasty and well executed.
Now the bad… I also had the sweet potato and quinoa taco. DON’T ORDER THIS UNLESS YOU PLAN TO BE DISAPPOINTED! Well, that’s MY foodie opinion. The sweet potato was undercooked, the quinoa was mushy and had a disgusting texture, and watery bland taste. Frankly, it added nothing to the taco since there was already grain in the corn tortilla. A better Taste and nutritional balance would have been to have Actually cooked the sweet potato through, then added some Red peppers, Grilled onions, or black beans for protein. With the cabbage and sauce, that would have made it a winner also.
If you’re a vegetarian or following a Mediterranean diet, your options are very limited. The fish and avocado are both fried… I haven’t had the fish, but the Avocado was certainly worth The additional calories if you could handle the breading. It was nice and Crisy, not at all oily.
More disappointment… If you want a beverage that has no sugar or alcohol you have one option… Agua Fresca (I think is what they call it). Sounds so delicious. This one had pineapple and ground cilantro. It was the only option…at least today. Cilantro is a really intense flavor to which people tend to respond strongly… either love or hate… and I happen to strongly dislike biting into it, but find it adds to some things in small quantities. The unfriendly girl at the Window Wasn’t really helpful when I tried to ask about how it was made or if there was plain water option, so I opened my mind. Well, they blended it in like a purée, so I guess that counts as fighting into it sort of… Actually, it’s worse than biting into it. Frankly it made me want to hurl…(that and the quinoia). I could barely recognize the pineapple in it! it’s kind of hard when the beverage that you’re counting on to wash down your food, especially food that you don’t like, is more offensive to you than the unpleasant food that you were washing down.
I over-tipped, given the terrible window service, but felt better about it because the folks at the counter inside were lovely, And I know that tips are shared. In retrospect, I wish I hadn’t given that I felt like I had to press to get my money back Since they had nothing else that I could buy to drink on the menu without sugar or alcohol. I could have traded for a taco, but the only non-meat taco that was the same cost as the beverage was the quinoa and sweet potato, which I forced down just to avoid having to complain about more than one thing and since I was hungry.
This is a very popular neighborhood restaurant. I’ve eaten there before when I wasn’t having as many health concerns, but frankly, I don’t remember what I ate and nothing eaten there previously left a memorable positive impression.
The place itself is a hole in the wall and feels kind of dirty inside. I chose to sit outside and endure 95° weather, if that says anything about it.
They also don’t take cash, which has become increasingly common, but I find it to be Annoying and inconvenient.
To each his own, I’d go back for the avocado taco if I had my own beverage in hand, and I would Willingly try a different kind of taco if it fits my dietary needs that day.
Mad Tacos would be well served to offer people, a plain sparkling water or club soda option for folks who don’t want tap water, sugar or alcohol. They should also rethink their disgusting, sweet potato and...
Read moreMy first time eating at Mas Tacos and I was highly impressed. The wait was worthwhile, while you stand on line for someone to take your order through the window. Make sure you grab a menu so you are ready to order when is your turn. I noticed patrons are waiting longer in the line to order because most people don't think of grabbing a menu to know what they want before is their turn to order. So please take the initiative to do so. If the weather permits you can seat outside, if not after you order at the outside window, then, you go inside and your name will be call over the speaker. Then, you go up to the high counter, grab your order, get the napkins on the right side of the high counter and choose a comfortable area to enjoy your food. The bathroom sign is written in spanish EL VAÑO. They have an antique music box and few other pieces that goes way back in history. The parking can be tricky, so get there with extra time to find a good parking spot. They have a bar inside. The inside sitting chairs are kinda small or the table are not too big but okay for a group to eat very close to each other. In overall it was a wrap to enjoy their food. I ordered quinoa potato taco, fried avocado taco and the roasted street corn loaded with spices. It reminded me of my trips to Mexico and also from back home growing up in the Caribbean. I highly recommend. It's family friendly and they also playing music. Please follow and relate my postings. I appreciate your time. Have a...
Read moreWe wanted somewhere that was more chill and not so touristy while we were visiting. We found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try.
Things to know:
This place is cash only but has an ATM. IT IS NOT BYOB ANYMORE. Parking is a bit ridiculous in this part of town but make sure to check out the closest side streets and you should be able to find something.
With that said, let's continue....
By the time we arrived around 7PM the line was fairly long and they were already out of the pork and chicken tacos but still had plenty to offer. We had the chance to really look over the menu while we waited in line. I decided to try the Elote, Spicy Carne Molida Taco and some Sweet Plantains. We gave them our names and found a seat in the side dining room. I like the feel of this place. It's like a thrown together shack with random tables, chairs and artwork. They called our names fairly quickly for the plantains and elote. Both were very tasty. I love elote aka mexican street corn and this rendition didn't disappoint. The plantains were great as well. They had crispy edges with with a nice silky inside. Our tacos were ready soon after. The cuban style ground beef was spicy and the sauce kept it very moist. It also had some spicy onions which gave it a nice crunch and the sour cream really calmed the spiciness of the beef.
Mas Tacos is a nice between of authentic tacos and the new age thing that's picking up traction. I'll stop by again soon to try the chicken...
