I know the name is cliche, and the building looks a bit run down making you think uhmn should we even try eating there? It is so worth it we finally ventured in here after 3 years of walking or driving past it going no thanks. It's a little dated but the layout is a retro 50s type bar upon entry and what I would call an L shaped dining area with about 15 tables or so. We had a lovely warm greeting upon entry and got to pick where we sat so choose the side part of the dining area away from viewing public mainly for privacy and to cool off as ir was a exceprionally hot day with a lot of walking making us look less than presentable.
Our order was taken quickly by 2 lovely waitresses one for drinks and one for food. My first oder was a fried chicken sandwich it came highly recommended by a friend and just what I'd been craving due to a issue with another meal similar elsewhere and wanting to see how the diners did in comparison. It said home breaded and home cut fries I was dubious to say the least as even if they say this I expected the generic tale of salesmanship on the paper to let me down. I was floored it truly was homebreaded that day and crispy as well as being tender without that ooze of grease I've been so accustomed to since moving to the states. The fries were freshly cut none of the usual frozen brand generic fries. I would call them little fries but still had a bit of skin here and there for crispy texture it did look like a small portion but it was more than enough for me to save seconds for later in the day.
My second trip was a bit different we chose to have the platters meal which consists of starter of choice salad, soup or chilli. I chose salad of course as that is my go to choice which was lovely had plenty of crunch not a wet mess of lettuce there was tomatoes and lettuce as well as some sliced cheese albiet the wierd rubbery type I couldn't complain as it was a generous helping of salad. My husband opted for chilli and said his was lovely but rather small it was a cup helping being a chilli lover he said he could've eaten 3 and that he'd wished he'd ordered the salad looked much more filling, our main was a grilled ham, cheese and chicken sandwich which comes in what resembles a chiabatta or panini type bread with fries. We absalutely loved this it was so filling we ended up saving half for later along with fries. The platter also gives you dill pickles which I love but often give to my husband as its not something I eat with my meals unless it's a burger or I'm craving one. I'd opt for pickled onions over pickle a very british custom I can't quite shift, so 2 out of 2 trips and we have been floored with the quality it may seem like a dive in passing but the food is top notch.
If you are looking for a well prepared meal that doesn't leave you feeling guilty by the amount on the plate this is perfect for you, however for those big eaters out there the portions may look small because even I went hmn seems a bit small but it beat me with quality over quantity. I find better food means I don't want to eat more . Prices seem on par for most eating establishments within New Carlisle Maybe a little bit more expensive depending on what is ordered but it is always done nicely...

Read moreI went to The Diner on 8-15-25. The place was packed and one table became available when we walked in, but had to be cleaned. Instead of blocking the door we went over to the table to wait for it to be wiped off. The waitress disgustedly said “it’s not clean yet”, and then proceeded to wait on another table and not come over to clean it. I don’t know her name, but she always has an attitude. It’s not Jen, she is wonderful! We just left instead of dealing...
