Kanela II New Haven — Restaurant in New Haven

I have visited a few times over the past year, more so recently due to familial needs in town. Each time I’ve visited I have had a wonderful experience. The staff are always so kind, friendly, and honest. I always ask for their recommendations, and each time I’ve been pleasantly surprised. I’ve branched out & tried new things because of the staff. Mari recommended the matcha earlier this week, stating the strawberry matcha was her favorite. I opted for the pineapple matcha during that visit (picture attached); however, today I tried the strawberry matcha. Although the strawberry is delicious, pineapple remains my favorite. Jacey recommended I try the iced matcha with strawberry cold foam during my next visit, even writing the item down so that I don’t forget the details. I also purchased their orange creamsicle Red Bull energy drink earlier this week (picture attached). It was so yummy! I tried their strawberry shortcake Red Bull energy drink today. It, too, was yummy, though orange creamsicle is superior. The service has always been above & beyond my expectations, which is why I will continue to support Kanela. I’ve been here a handful of times over the past year or so, and every time I’m pretty disappointed. I really want to like them and support local-ish, and the staff has always been pretty friendly to me at least!

However.

I did a mobile order and waited at least 20 minutes in line. That alone would’ve been fine to wait, I wasn’t in that much of a rush. But every time I come here, they don’t follow what I ask. I always ask for my coffee to be not very sweet and with just a little flavor. Every single time I haven’t been able to taste the coffee at all. I’m not sure if the coffee isn’t strong enough or they’re just adding way too much honey/flavoring/syrup but it has just...

This place was phenomenal when they first opened, but they’ve really gone downhill. Though their drinks taste great, the food has always been less than satisfactory, and the line can tend to move pretty slow sometimes. The reward system for their drinks is kind of ridiculous. You have to spend an absurd amount of money, just to get a free upsize for your next drink. Today was the frosting on the cake for me, though, because the lid to my coffee was not secure in the least. It leaked all over me, and eventually the whole lid popped off. I’d like to think they’ll get it together eventually, but I think it will be a while...
