One of the greatest craft beer success stories out of Albuquerque in the last few years is Steelbender. Located on NW 2nd Street, the original restaurant and brewery are huge, but they have done so well that they have added on a separate production brewery immediately behind it and to the west. Of all the ABQ Breweries I have been to, this one steals my heart for great food and bev, but also its production capabilities! Judging by the crowd that Friday night, I’d say it has done the same for many others. Luckily, two bar seats opened up at the right time, and we grabbed them, averting a very long wait for a table. Since I’m pro-IPA, I went with a couple of old favorites, Mañana Hazy (7.3% ABV; 50 IBU) and Skull Bucket (7% ABV; 80 IBU). Both are delightful and approachable IPAs, in spite of being hop-forward. Alcohol contents are typical for the genre, meaning that it pays to keep count. Three of these is more than four regular beers. My drinking buddy that night went with the Compa Blue Corn Lager (5.5% ABV; 20 IBU), which he found to be refreshing and very crushable. For dinner I chose the Seitan “Wings.” Steelbender makes their own Seitan, which they cut into cubes (aka, “wings”) or patties, like a burger. I have had the former, but decided to go with a different shape this time. Once cut into cubes they are rolled in cornmeal and nutritional yeast, making them ideal for vegans. A spicy hot sauce packed a lot of flavor into this high-protein meal. My buddy opted for the Pulled Pork sandwich and fries, which he also found to be to his liking. I’ve been to Steelbender many times when visiting Albuquerque, and no matter how hard I try to convince myself I should keep trying breweries I have never been to before, I keep this one in the mix anyway. It’s that good. Just try not to come when it’s busy.

Went to Steel Bender for the first time with friends for some beers and grub. As usual this local brewery has a number of choices of brew pub grub and brews. I enjoyed the Cobb salad with exceptional bacon (all bacon is exceptional, this was extra) and chicken that looked like it would be dry but absolutely wasn't. This was a filling salad indeed. Being at a brewery I had to have a big pretzel because, well, brewery. This one arrived nice and hot and the beer cheese along side it was quite flavorful with just a tiny kick. I had several beers including a barrel-aged beer and while I love the rich maltiness of the barrel-aged beers from Anderson Valley, well, one was plenty here. But the Oktober Fiesta was the winner by a long shot. What a very flavorful German-style beer. I need to go back and try some other styles as well - I don't think I chose well and I wish I could have read the descriptions on the menu but I didn't bring a microscope. I also tried the Lloyd's Picnic Kölsch which has a bit of watermelon flavor to it. Had the menu been printed in a font size I could read, I wouldn't have gotten this but would have gotten a more traditional Kölsch instead. Not a big fan of watermelon in beer. Or even in watermelon. Bleh. Whoever is in charge of the kitchen at this place is nailing it. The food and service are exceptional, fast and the food comes out hot and fresh. This was especially impressive given how many people were here. We sat on the patio on a day where the temps approached 100°F but the patio's misters and shade canopies made it a very pleasant place to be. Good food, good service, good beer. Gotta go back. Again. And again.

Well, folks, let me tell you, on paper, this joint looks like the bee's knees! You'd think they've got it all figured out - outdoor seating adorned with more string lights than a disco ball, enough greenery to make a forest blush, and a drink menu packed with local brews that could make a hops farmer proud. But hold onto your cowboy hats, because reality ain't quite as rosy as those twinkling lights. We kicked things off with pretzels and buffalo tots, and I gotta admit, that was like a two-steppin' start to the evening. But then, they served up a burger that thought it was auditioning for a cooking show – an overwhelming egg flavor that left us all clucking and unseasoned meat that had less spice than your grandma's knitting circle. Now, let's talk truffle fries, shall we? They were as exciting as a rodeo without a bull. The service? Well, partner, it was slower than a snail on a Sunday stroll, but we'll give 'em the benefit of the doubt – maybe they had more tumbleweeds than staff. So here's the deal, amigos and amigas, if you find yourself here, stick to the beer, soak in that outdoor ambiance, and just pretend you're at a wild west saloon. Yeehaw, indeed! 🤠🍻

Wow! Whoever set the menu up at this place knows how to match fresh brewed beer and food flavor! Very impressed. Let's face it, the green chile strips are the bomb! Nice portion comfort food, and the fish and chips were plentiful, filling, cooked perfectly and matched perfectly with the Blue Bullet Stout. Green chile mayonnaise was great flavor. Fries were so-so. Nice atmosphere, menu, and beer selection - I'll need to go back next visit to sample more. Wait staff, well... our guy was definitely not excited about anything, and slow. Why can't they acknowledge they see you, and just say they'll be a minute, instead of making eye contact and walking away, leaving you to wonder if you're in a service section or have to go to the bar? I sat there for ten minutes with him passing 3 times, without a word. I don't know, but it's all too common now, I guess. Anyway, great addition to the many breweries in Albuquerque! Really like this place.
