I am heartbroken to have to write this review. Like some other reviews I just read, Sammy's has lost their swagger. I have talked this rearaurant up for years, and brought many people (locals and visitors) here over the last few years. NO MORE! The main issue was the brisket plate I ordered. This was literally the worst piece of meat I have ever been served. I'd call it shoe leather but that would be insulting to all shoes. The worst part is that there is LITERALLY NO WAY THAT THE COOK DID NOT KNOW HE/SHE WAS SERVING ME GARBAGE. THIS PIECE OF MEAT WAS SO HARD AND DRY IT WAS OBVIOUS. I worked in restaurants for 2 decades, and I understand food cost and not wasting food, but you cannot serve complete, inedible garbage. So you saved a few bucks by giving me this crap. The result? I can no longer recommend Sammy's. I will no longer bring anyone in to dine at Sammy's. Granted, I don't go that often, but last time I was there (Jazz Fest) we had a.party of six. The time before that we had 3, all who.came because I recommended we go there. Even if I am coming in only 3 or 4 times a year, was saving $3 by serving me old, dried out garbage meat worth it? Even when by myself, I usually order at least 2 entrees (had brisket plate and stuffed shrimp plate today). No more. Serve me garbage and lose me. When I pulled up, I thought Sammy's may be closed, as there was not one car parked in front, which is very unusual. The girl behind the register said it was slow, and now I know why. You've GOT to do better. To be fair, the stuffed shrimp and creamed spinach were OK. The baked beans were more sausage than beans, amd just OK. Potato salad and mac & cheese were bland. And I've never been a fan of the creamy horseradish sauce for the shrimp. A comeback sauce or remolade would be a better fit. That's why I take it home and use one of those. Anyway, Will probably be a very long time before I head back to your restaurant, and I.won't bring anyone back until you get your...
Read moreI’ve been coming to Sammy’s for 5 years now. Part of the charm is that it’s in the middle of industrial buildings and freeway entrance. Meaning it’s not a very charming place at all. But once you get inside, it’s pure New Orleans in food, friendliness and clientele. Sometimes Rough, sure, but it ain’t personal. And you will hear Dr. John spoke here. Accents. Sammy’s offers fountain drinks mostly but some bottles and a few desserts are available. Think Keylime pie, pecan pie. If there are big lines they move quickly. The tables are cleaned led by staff but staff is busy you may need to lend a hand. there are only about 10, 12 tables to be had. It’s becoming harder and harder to find authentic food in New Orleans that is not too precious and PrePaired just for the tourist dollar. But part of what makes homemade delicious is that it’s not always ..consistent. The cook has feelings. Sammy’s might be a dive next to the freeway but the folks back in the kitchen aren’t making real food. Sammy’s has wonderful trout/fish almandine that rivals Medinas on Canal. The poor boys are great, The burger is good, the gravy is Yum. Also they make real fried chicken - not just fried chicken tenders . Very hard to find real fried chicken at a sit down place in New Orleans. A very Good Cobb -. They serve the lighter side fare meaning food that is not fried! big salads, turkey sandwiches. But you can get a salad or turkey sandwich most places - you come to Sammys for real (fat) New Orleans food. We have never had a bad meal or an unpleasant...
Read moreToday my coworker and I went to Sammy's. Being Friday, we were looking for seafood and we found a decent selection. We both ordered the Seafood Stuffed Shrimp with two sides. Our orders took a little longer that we would have like, but the food was very good - the breading on the shrimp was perfect - light and crispy. My only complaint with the food was that the Seafood Stuffing was way more stuffing than seafood. The sides (mac & cheese, candied yams, and red potatoes & parsley) were also very good. My biggest disappointment came when, after ordering, I realized that in spite of having an iced tea maker (sitting right there on the beverage bar), which I always look for to determine if a restaurant makes their own iced tea, Sammy's no longer makes their own iced tea, instead opting for the sad tasteless substitution of Gold Peak Tea, which is closer to a soft drink than iced tea. I am not sure who made the less than wise business decision to switch to fake-iced tea, but I counted no fewer than four different customers who begrudgingly drank this tea by adding lemonade or other offerings to make it palatable - complaining the whole time they did so. I guess Sammy's must save money on reduced consumption of beverages... In spite of how much I liked Sammy's food, I will never return until they once again offer real...
