A coworker and I decided to adopt a Cheese Friday and this was the third spot on our monthly trip. I didn't know what I wanted to order because everything looked delicious so I asked the guy at the register what he suggested - I opted for the Gruyere Sandwich - and added ham to Cave aged Swiss Gruyere and caramelized onion confit grilled on Wild Flour multigrain bread with a side salad and an iced tea.
The salad was very good for a "side" and i woofed it down before even picking it apart to see what was in it - it was composed of some greens (spring mix?), cheese and dressing.
Next, I took a bit of my sandwich and it was to die for! the only thing that could have made this thing better were if they put thin slices of apples on the sandwich! I don't even LIKE multigrain bread and I couldn't get over how yummy this grown up grilled cheese sandwich was in my tummy!
My coworker had the Mac and Cheese and a cheese plate, and I sampled the Mac and Cheese. I'm not sure which cheese's were used but the Mac and Cheese had a bite to die for. I cannot wait for the next time I come here because I think I want to get the...
Read moreIt seems that everyone I know loves this place. While I am sure they will shun me now, I think St. James is just OK.
St. James is an attractive place. The large cooler filled with an incredible variety of cheese was impressive. But I wasn't there for wheels of exotic cheese, I was there for lunch.
I ordered the smokey blue sandwich. i am a big fan of beef and blue cheese so I figured that sandwich would be perfect for me. The ingredients were obviously very fresh and of high quality. Together they should have made a great sandwich, but something was missing. The sandwich was kind of dry and difficult to eat. Don't get me wrong, it had a good taste, but something was missing. It was served with chips which seemed to be plain Zapp's or some similar variety.
The dining area is small. For a quick lunch that wasn't a huge issue, but the tables were so close together, carrying on a private conversation was impossible.
I know most people love this place, but I didn't. Maybe it was just an off day, or maybe I ordered poorly. Next time I will try a different sandwich and see if I have the jaw dropping experience...
Read moreI ordered a classic grilled cheese on sourdough and Mac & cheese, both with bacon.
The sandwich was hard and overcooked. In my opinion, burnt. I could not even taste the sourdough because it was overpowered by the taste of charring and carmelization. I don’t know why the sandwich was so hard. Either because it was burnt, or due to stale bread, I don’t know. None of the sandwiches in their Google maps photos appear burnt. They look normal and that’s what I had hoped for.
The Mac & cheese was better, but the bacon was also overcooked.
Perhaps these are personal preferences, but it was not a pleasant experience. I could not finish either item and the total with tax was $28.
Unfortunately I ordered via DoorDash, so I couldn’t go up to the counter and ask for it to be re-made. And I paid extra for priority delivery, so it arrived within 15 minutes. It was actually still too hot to eat when I unwrapped it, so it was freshly made.
The most disappointment per dollar spent on a meal in...
