I live locally and have been several times over the past year or so since they've been operating as the Shanty. Each time has been worse than the last. Normally, I don't write reviews. Normally, I'm pretty understanding, but tonight's experience was so bad that I feel compelled to post this and warn others. The food was absolute bottom tier. Seriously, I've had better in a MRE in the Navy. The service was virtually non existent. The entire bar area reeked of old, nasty dishwater, but then suddenly it changed to old boiled cabbage after the ceiling fans kicked on. What was that all about? In any case, it was awful. It all came to head for me when, after spending over $60. for dinner, I stepped outside for about 15 minutes and then wasn't allowed back in due to not having an ID on my person. Really? I've been in your restaurant now for over 2 hours, the place was not that busy, and now I'm not allowed back in due to not having an ID? It was in my car and told the gentleman at the door as such. He thought it was funny and told me to go get it. This is the same guy who had seen me in the building earlier. At that point I left. I had had enough. My tab was paid, I don't need this level of grief to go back into a failing bar with a terrible band and spend money. I'm 43 years old with some hard miles on me. I don't physically look anywhere even close to 21. It wasn't a judgment call at all. It was a game, and after I just dropped a fair sum on dinner, I think that I could have been treated with a little more respect and courtesy. Sorry Tuohy brothers, you've lost a local patron permanently and I will not ever recommend this place to anyone I know and am posting this to warn others about how bad this place really is. In closing, I say this to anyone reading this: stay away. Go elsewhere....

The bartender/waitress is always rude for over a year I have been a faithful customer when I visited Friday night w a friend they approached me loudly making a scene so others could hear they said they wouldnt serve me til I paid My reply was that I did pay w Cash and left a $10 tip which was far above - i wasnt paying twice and ask for a receipt- do not pay w cash!!! Beware-- addition to this on entering Bubbas on Friday after work- greeted in an down right disrespectful way same waitress from the Shanty- her mother- and her sister cussing, yelling saying listen "B?!!!" YOU DONT WALK AWAY FROM- I kept walking into the hostess requested a seat the 3 followed me in yelling loudly making a scene informing as many could here, the mother kept pushing her fingers in my face threatening me saying I better watch my back that I may not know what hit me... I told her to not threaten me and I was not scared and to leave me alone- the rants continued - the hostess asked them to leave-- Ridiculous uncalled for behaviour- unprofessional- needless to say many people told me I was the adult and they apologized for their absurd behaviour and said so uncalled for how they were acting is wrong-- We dont behave or act this way nor do we treat people this way in Sunapee... Terrible behaviours - the next time im confronted I will file a police report against them. Im sure the cameras on the exterior and interior ofBubbas could show this happening-...

8/20/24—It was our last night in New Hampshire, after spending a grand time at an Airbnb on the shores of Sunapee Lake. Now, we’d heard tell of a fine Irish pub not far from where we were staying. And seeing as my husband’s half Irish himself, we figured it’d be a shame not to give it a go.

Now, truth be told, Irish food isn’t usually my cup of tea, but for the sake of harmony—I’d dragged him off to visit President Franklin Pierce’s Homestead earlier, after all—I thought, why not? So off we went, just a wee drive from the lake house.

We arrived at the pub around 2:40 in the afternoon, and it was still quiet, the kind of calm before the evening storm, I’d say. They handed us the menu, and some tunes filled the air. My husband’s eyes lit up; he knew the songs, but as for me, I hadn’t a clue who was singing.

I settled on a hamburger and nachos—something simple, you know. But wouldn’t you know it, both dishes arrived at the same time. Not to waste good food, I packed the nachos up to take home. And let me tell you, finding decaf coffee on the menu was a blessing! It’s the small comforts that matter, isn’t it?

The pub itself was spacious, and I could just imagine the craic that must go on there once the sun goes down. But we’re not the sort to be out late, so that part of the story remains a mystery to us. Still, I’d say this place is worth a visit, for sure. And, we’ll be back someday,...

5 minute walk from The Lake Inn at Mount Sunapee. Nice bar atmosphere. Pub tables and a bar area to sit. We ordered the brussel sprouts, which were really good and my bestie ordered the mac and cheese. I personally wanted to give it one star - but she said it was okay and I am taking her thought into consideration when writing this review. People who read my reviews know that I love my mac and cheese and I personally can make a excellent Mac and cheese, so I am a bit judgy when it comes to buying mac and cheese at restaurants. They made it sound good on the menu however it was watery and the cheese was not sticking to the noodles. There was not one bit of stretch cheese when pulling up on the noodles and if you eat macaroni and cheese you understand what I'm saying. Very bland and just not good. Maybe it was just a bad night for mac and cheese, but I kind of think not. Andrea was our server and she was fine, however I think she could smile a little more. She keeps this straight sort of mean mugging face and having been a bartender / waitress for years- I somewhat get it, however it was really hard to see an attractive young lady waitressing / bartending not smiling more. The drinks were good and the pints were good, prices were Fair. They close at 9:00 p.m., so prepare to be ready to leave around 9:00 p.m.

I really love the Pub in Newport. Sadly, none of the others (so far) seem to measure up. I don’t understand why, but there it is. Got the Fish n Chips, which should be a slam dunk, right? The fish was good. The batter? Not so much. It might be a function of the fryer temp being too low. It would explain the soggy fries, too. The cole slaw was amazingly annoying. I wish I could say it was old and fermenting. But, I really believe they were shooting for that flavor. Sigh. The iced tea came in a bottle. Ugh. Does that mean you have to pay for a refill? I was already more than $25 into this meal, so I wasn’t going to find out…
