Coliseum Pool & Grill | Newport Beach’s Stunning Sunset Spot 🌄

As we are still in the middle of the pandemic, choosing a place to eat became a challenge. Coliseum is the first place that came to our mind where we thought we will be at ease and enjoy the pleasures of eating out. We were not mistaken. They took great care and precautions to make their guest feel safe and comfortable. We had a brunch and as soon as we arrived four our appointed time, we were seated at our table outside. The staff and guests are required to wear a mask. Once seated at your table, you can take off your mask. There was a sign placed on our table that stated it has been sanitized. There was quite bit of space between the tables and they also sit guests at tables with empty tables in between if there is not enough customers. Our food was great and service was professional. The view and weather combined with the relax atmosphere made as at ease and enjoyed the simple pleasures of eating outside again. There is no more vallet service and you need to park your car at the parking garage by the hotel.

A total of five girlfriends and I went here for brunch on Sunday. The waiter (Cameron) took our cards/cash and did the transaction. We left the table to take some photos and the waiter came to find us and told us he pressed the wrong button and our cards were not charged. He also took cash. We gave our cards, understandingly and he came back. A few minutes later he came over again and said the system wasn’t working and our cards were not charged so he had to take our cards again. We thought it would be easier to put it all on one card, so this time we only gave one card to make the transaction easy for him. He came back with a receipt and a manager that said they completely voided everything and this would be the only charge. We all left and soon realized that he did charge each card three times (mine was supposed to be $29 and he charged me $90 instead). The manager was not kind about the situation and we still all tipped. Be aware if you go here and always make sure to look at your bank charges.

HORRIBLE FOR PARTY OF 10+

Let me start by saying our server Angelica was the nicest coolest server I have ever had. That is the only nice thing I will say. Please give her a raise or something, cause she was the only thing that was good about this restaurant.

We were here for my grandmothers birthday, a special occasion. When we arrived we found out that the breakfast brunch menu had only 10 items, most being burgers and pasta. The only egg dish was your choice eggs, something we can make at home. When we asked the front of house why, we were told it was because we had a large party. If we knew that we would have never came to Pelican Hills. We asked the manager if we could order off the real menu, we were willing to wait extra long, but they said no. We were stuck with a menu with probably 10 options. What restaurant does not warn their diners about a bogus and horrible policy and expect them to be ok with it?? Especially with the price we paid!! When the food arrived, it looked good, but was nothing special. The burger was worst than a fast burger with the fries being salty. The burrito was bland and average. The food was not even that good. The front of house was very rude, I found them cold and unhelpful. After we told them it was our grandmas birthday, nothing came, nothing happened. Honestly Pelican Hills is gorgeous, but you could find way better food. Please do not expect anything amazing here, especially if you have a large party. Food is average. You’re coming here for the view. Don’t expect excellent service or great food. I understand that it is not their fault, but they should have done something. I am embarrassed that my grandmother had to experience such a bad restaurant for her birthday. You ruined this special day. I am extremely disappointed. Who does all of this, dosent give a cake or something, what restaurant is this? This is not what Pelicans...

We had a really unfortunate experience here. From the moment we arrived at the bar to when we moved to the outdoor seating. The bartenders seemed visibly annoyed when my husband and mother-in-law tried to make small talk, even though we were the only ones at the bar. It felt like our presence was an inconvenience to them.

After ordering drinks, we asked the host if we could sit outside to enjoy the view. Once seated, a server named Rachael approached us and immediately made us feel unwelcome. We mentioned we were thinking of getting appetizers but were going to hold off for now. She made a condescending comment along the lines of, “You ordered at the bar and now you’re sitting here. You should’ve ordered here instead.”

It was clear she was irritated that we didn’t place our full order through her section—almost as if she was upset about potentially missing out on the tip. Her tone came off as passive-aggressive, especially since we had every intention of ordering more items from the menu. We weren’t trying to camp out at the table or avoid tipping—let’s get that straight.

Because of the cold and unwelcoming service, we decided to just order another round of drinks, enjoy the view, and head out. It felt like we weren’t welcome, and seems like that’s the tone after reading some of the other reviews. Sorry we’re not the typical white clientele they might expect. But we have every right to enjoy these spaces too.

We did our best to salvage the experience since we were celebrating my mother-in-law’s birthday and she had come from out of state. Unfortunately, the service left a negative impression and I wouldn’t recommend this place.

Views were great, vibes...

On June 2 at 7:15 pm, I invited some friends to join us for dinner at the Coliseum restaurant. My family and friends and I booked a reservation for tonight two weeks ago. We often travel from Texas to Newport Coast. The Pelican Hotel and all of its restaurants were a pleasant experience for us. Tonight, we had a terrible experience, and I was highly disappointed in your service. Firstly, it took half an hour for someone to take our order at the table. After that, we waited more than an hour for our food. The medium well-done meat on my plate was completely undercooked, and no one asked if we needed anything else.

Three wine glasses are needed. It took me two attempts to get a response from the waitress. When I walked up to the bar, the bartender gave me three wine glasses. No one came to clean the table and prepare it for dessert after we finished eating. Since I had to do it myself, we ordered five coffees and two teas when the dessert arrived. It took two or three times for someone to give my grandma the heater, as she was very ill. When I asked the waitress about the bag, she said she had already given it to you. There was something wrong with our coffee. It was cold, old, and tasted awful. Despite paying more than 250 dollars for the service fee and leaving a tip, I had a disappointing experience at your restaurant tonight. If I have a complaint about a restaurant, I prefer to speak with the management directly instead of writing a review. At the Pelican Hotel, such things shouldn't happen.

In general, I don't write reviews when I have a problem, but I was having trouble contacting the manager of...
