Dr. Appointment in Newport.. need food.. search google.. Big Boys County Buffet and Kitchen pops up.. first thing I noticed.. it is rated as one of the best places to eat in Newport.. with thousands of people agreein'. Shoot why not. Buffet.. can't lose.. First things you notices.. it's new.. it's simple.. it's clean... Like super clean. You can walk in and, you can tell... This is where all the locals go.. we get seated,. And our waitress, treats us like we are local and family.. we got the boys with us.. and is telling us how to get the best deal.. so already impressed.. Now to the food... I saw two big boys coming from the kitchen, one in a chefs jacket... Strange . Yes.. there is nothing fancy here. it was if a grandma said this is the menu, keep it simple.. don't be getting all fancy.. and they said yes ma'am.. and they don't go against what grandma says.. however, this is where simple stops... Because those chef coats... Proved true.. they kept it simple, but refined the accents on the flavors.. ( keep it mind, I myself have a chef's coat well earned after 20 years ) so what looks basic, if far from it in flavor.. let's start simple, get the fried chicken.. getting juicy fried chicken is easy.. getting flavor into that chicken is a skill, and I mean IN the chicken, take the skin off ( we will get back to that in a second) . and the flavor is still there... It accentuates the chicken.. marinated.. injected.. a pact with the fried chicken gods, that even Harland Sanders wouldn't make.. probably. Now back to that chicken skin.. how do you pork rind, chicken skin ON THE CHICKEN, without making the whole bird greasy, and yet the breading stays light and airy... Voodoo is involved, or them Big Boys got some skills.. And that's just on one item. That chili is not a simple chili. That is flavor developed chili that was mastered... corn on the cob that is so tender.. butter and salt need not apply because it is already there.. oh it's a science.. and then there is the pot roast... What's no brown gravy?? This might be slightly lacking... Nope.. I have to say that there is no brown gravy in the world that could make that roast any better... You don't need the gravy.. because you don't want to mask any of the flavors in the meat or the vegetables.. this is a composed dish, this was planned .. in lab.. or secret laid deep underground, involving aliens... Who captured pot roast champions through the world.. and made them compose perfection.. with an angelic choir singing in the background .. and dropped off the results in a small town in Tennessee... So, how do I describe Big Boys, simple food, perfectly mastered, and served simple..

The main reason I am sharing my review is because the previous reviews were all negative and from my perspective are not valid. This restaurant is always full of local people, which says volumes. This little cafeteria style restaurant is budget friendly, and has home cooked food. They have a regular menu, but most people prefer the buffet. Dinner price is $11.99! You cannot beat it! The food is typical to the area. The restaurant is clean, and organized. The staff was friendly. All in all we had a very satisfactory experience. It’s worth the stop. Good food, good price, good service! Enough said!

Great buffet! Love the pan fried chicken; it has the best flavor!! The green beans need more spice & flavor, & the creamed corn was too runny this time. Awesome dressing & mashed potatoes! Ty for a good home cooked meal 😋 **Today’s meal was not up to par! The hot bar was not as good as usual!! Their chicken fingers were very dry & rubbery. They offered bbq pulled pork, ribs, jalapeño poppers, corn on the cob, fried diced potatoes that were very greasy & yummy green beans. My favorite macaroni salad wasn’t on the salad bar again & the lettuce looked a little brown. C’mon Big Boys!

Let me preface this by saying the food itself was excellent. I don’t usually take the time to write negative reviews as I only take my own time out of my day to commend excellent service, etc. However, this experience called for me taking time out of my day to do so, which is unfortunate to be quite honest. Myself and some coworkers came to eat here for lunch. I had been once before and everything was phenomenal. However, while waiting for our third guest to arrive we had gotten her order so we could go ahead and place the order. As I was trying to get our waitresses attention (the younger female with tattoos, I don’t recall her name) another waitress said “girls do you need something? Are you waiting on someone?” Which got the attention of our actual waitress. We told her we were ready to order and our waitress loudly exclaimed “YEAH I WAS WAITING ON SOMEONE” As if us deciding we would go ahead and order (because again we had gotten our coworkers order because we are on our lunch break and don’t have an unlimited amount of time to wait) was an issue for her. So our coworker had mentioned waffle fries as she had gotten them on a few separate occasions recently and our waitress said they didn’t have them. Our coworker walked in the door and she had asked our waitress if she could just check and make sure. The waitress became super defensive and stormed in the kitchen and yelled “do we have waffle fries?” Some kitchen staff said no and another waitress said that they did have them before and sometimes they get put on the buffet.” Our waitress comes back and with an attitude says that they didn’t have them. This would’ve been fine but it doesn’t stop there. For the rest of our time waiting for food and eating the waitress continued to talk about these waffle fries and even went back into the kitchen to continue talking about these waffle fries as if it was such a big issue that she asked. Obviously these comments were pointed at my coworker for simply asking a question. Next thing we know, a female staff member (pink under armour hat” comes out again loudly (because none of this could’ve been done discreetly apparently) also with an attitude “JUST SO THERES SO CONFUSION ON THE WAFFLE FRIES.” By this point my coworkers were super uncomfortable at the fact the half of the staff was bothered by someone asking about waffle fries. None of this would have been an issue if the staff didn’t go out of there way to make their snide remarks and comments lout enough for us and probably the whole restaurant to hear. They talked about my coworker asking for waffle fries for our entire duration of being there. Which honestly became really tiresome for us. As soon as we thought the waffle fry issue was over someone would make another snide remark. As we were leaving our waitress (again loud enough for us to hear it at check out) was talking about my coworkers and I finding them on google. Oddly enough that was exactly my plan. This all could’ve been solved with a “I checked and I’m sorry we actually don’t have them and I’m sorry for any confusion” but instead it turned into a whole issue over asking for a certain type of fry, which is super juvenile to begin with. From the beginning our waitress made it seem like my coworker was lying about having waffle fries there saying they ever carried them or had them. I don’t know anyone who would lie about having a certain cut of fry somewhere, nonetheless, Maybe it was just a bad day but if you’re going to be in customer service you cannot take your bad day out on those your serving. I literally did not want to even make this review but spending a while lunch having to listen to staff to continue to make remarks about someone asking a question is ridiculous. I also get eveyone has a bad day and their temper may be short, but having a “moment” and a “moment” that lasts over 30 minutes is uncalled for. If you’re going to make those remarks at least do it in privacy and not in earshot of paying...

Horrible. My wife, myself and our son, after searching half of Newport for a buffet, settled on Lois's country kitchen at the recommendation of a customer at Walmart (we're new to the area). We walked in and we're seated by the buffet. The woman, after realizing we were together, stared at us very strangely for far longer than was comfortable. We ordered the buffet for us and mini corn dogs for our son. Neither of us are very picky eaters. After hitting the salad bar (and digging through most of the lettuce just to remove the bitter core left in it) we both got a little of everything from the bar. Let me start by saying the ONLY thing edible they didn't require a ton of salt to alter the tastelessness of it all was the barbecue pork. The only thing either of us are at all. The fried chicken was slightly crispy on the outside, the breading under it however was soggy and the chicken itself was dry like it had sat there for some time under the hearing lamp. Both the potato salad and the mashed potatoes were completely tasteless, I mean zero flavor. I tried the fried potatoes, How do you mess that up?!) Were rubber. I ate one and immediately spit it out. The soup flavor was unidentifiable and left a funny aftertaste. After returning to our table, our waitress hovered over us for several minutes, asked literally 3 times in a row if we needed extra plates. After responding "no" 3 different times, she returned with plates and set them down anyway, then hovered for an additional minute asking repeatedly if we needed anything. After which I started to get irritated and had to slightly raise my voice and respond "no!" Firmly to get her to leave. She returned to ask if she could take our plates as neither of us continued eating after small bites of every thing yielded complete disappointment. I told her she could take everything, it was terrible food. After taking 3 very full plates away she promptly returned with a $25 bill, dropped it on the table and left. I went to pay the bill for my son's corndogs, fully expecting not to be charged for food we barely touched. I informed the woman they we did not care for our meal at all and barely touched it, at which point she responded "well we have a menu for you to order something for the kitchen". I told her we were definitely not interested in ordering anything else, she told me maybe I should call the owner in a few days when she returns and maybe she could do something. We were stared at by bother the cashier and our waitress all the way out the door. And fully charged. We left hungry and deeply dissatisfied, not to mention a wallet $25 lighter. A terrible experience we will NEVER repeat. Don't waste...
