Today I had a craving for ramen and decided to try a new restaurant. Found myself here and I’ll say I’m very glad I found this place. Had likely one of the best appetizers and dinner I’ve had ever for a ramen experience.
Walked in this location expecting it to be a small restaurant but ended up being larger then I thought once I stepped foot in.
I had started with the Pork Cha Shu Buns and ended off with the Spicy Miso Ramen with an extra addition of fried garlic.
The Pork Cha Shu Buns. The light and airy buns that had a sweetness to it that was definitely unexpected. The thin cut pork provide a great flavor and have slight fatty bit in it that definitely helps the thin cuts. The carrot and cilantro sliced into a slices and add a crunch to such a delicious bun. To top it off it’s given a soft glaze of a teriyaki and siracha sauce that bring the whole dish today for the perfect bite every time.
Next we had the Pork Cha Shu Ramen with Fried Garlic. A simple yet savory broth that was a godsend. The fried garlic playfully adding its own tastes and crunches that I didn’t think was possible to be all together.
Then we have the noodles, a soft yet bouncy chew to it that had wood ear mushrooms hiding in between the strands of noodle. The menma(bamboo shoots), a slight crunch texture but also provides a savory flavor that wasn’t expected.
The pork then joining in with a lovely char in addition to such an elegant broth. Thinly sliced and perfectly layered on top of the dish to show off what they chefs view of what near perfection should be.
After all this comes the sold boiled marinated egg that penetrates every atom of the yolk and whites. The sweetness that comes from this was something I’ve never had before and I would return begging for extra after what this gave me as a punch of flavor.
Mixing all of this together in a single bite is something I didn’t think I would accomplish but let me tell you I’ve never tasted anything better but this.
I’d recommend anyone that wants to give this dish a try then they must come here for this first time. Nothing will beat...
Read moreI was excited to try Coco Ramen in Newton Center based on high online ratings. We started with fried oysters and karaage chicken. The fried oysters were good, crispy outside and juicy inside. The karaage chicken was decent but had some tougher tendon parts. I'd probably order both again.
I chose the dirty shoyu ramen with chicken, described as a creamier shoyu ramen. The broth was average, with a large serving of noodles and a good amount of chicken. The noodles were standard packaged yellow curly ones, and the chicken, being a chicken breast, was unfortunately tough. I also tried the chashu, thinly sliced but a bit hard.
I sampled both the curry ramen and spicy miso broths, which tasted good but not exceptional. I'm unsure if I'd return, but if I did, I might opt for the shoyu ramen, although I wasn't a fan of the protein choices. They offer a nice selection of beverages, and the service is good, managing to fit a good number of tables in the small space.
Overall it's a solid spot but in an area with so many great ramen options, I probably...
Read moreThe clear shio ramen was good. It was a light broth as described, so it wasn't very flavorful. All of the toppings were good. The chasiu (pork) slices were a bit fatty for my taste, but very tender and tasty. Either I was extra hungry that day or the portion size seemed like it might be a little on the smaller side, but the price was reasonable.
The karaage chicken order consisted of five pieces of dark meat, surrounded by a very thin yet perfectly crispy skin.
The neighboring restaurant, Coconut Newton, also has extra seating for this location.
Service was very friendly. I plan to return to try...
