A complete letdown of an experience, not worthy of even the most MID of all Mess halls. The waffle batter was extremely bland, leaving me, longing for the quality inn, breakfast bar waffles over these tasteless, unsweetened, zero flavor excuses for waffles. I ordered the country breakfast, waffles, supposedly a Belgian waffle, topped with fried chicken, scrambled eggs, and country sausage gravy. What I got was a completely bland plate of what I hesitate to even call food. The scrambled eggs were definitely from a powder/dehydrated style mix. They had no flavor, contributing to the overall bland experience. The country gravy tasted like flour and water, even though you could see sausage pieces in it. I don’t know how this place managed to make sausage gravy with sausage pieces in it, and still not have any meat flavor at all. Unfortunately, there’s only salt and pepper packets in the pre-wrap plastic silverware available for dining, and no other flavor enhancers available at hand. Lastly, the “fried chicken” was simply a store-bought, frozen popcorn, chicken, cooked in either a microwave, or a brief stint in an air fryer. The outer edges of what I was served were barely tinged with a light brown, most of the chicken being fairly white, or a light beige color. I tried my best to salvage the flavorless waffles by using the [unlabeled] syrup provided at the seating areas, but even that left much to be desired. The syrup was barely sweet, and definitely in need of a complete brand swap, or enhancement of some sort. Overall I felt like this was a complete waste of $14 for a meal that I could’ve cooked in the microwave at home, and probably done a better job at fully cooking and flavoring the meal.
Also, a warning to anyone who might decide to dine-in at this location: the red chairs provided for seating are EXTREMELY flimsy. And trying to take a seat at the breakfast bar level seating in the first room, I almost spun completely around breaking the chair. There’s no way these chairs are made for more than a 250 pound capacity, and even those with smaller builds should take extreme caution when seating in order to avoid accident or injury. Several chairs were dragged to the exterior of the room with make shift signs labeling them as broken. All in all, this was a poor choice for breakfast this morning, and I highly recommend finding somewhere else to eat on...
Read moresigh I gave them 3 stars instead of 2 because they’re new and it’s during COVID, but there’s some serious room for improvement. Good idea, poorly executed and understaffed.
When you walk in from Selden Market there’s no menu accessible inside besides at the cashier. They have a large TV that could double as a menu so people aren’t reaching over each other or needing to make decisions on the spot when they get to the front. There’s a trash can on top of the counter for sugar packets and stir sticks that could pretty easily be on the ground so their isn’t trash next to the things I’m about to use. Only one hand sanitizer and it was empty.
The decor doesn’t fit the Selden vibe. The framed memes feel more like a college campus than Downtown Norfolk. There was a plastic drop cloth covering the decorative wood under the counter. Water damage in ceiling tiles.
We waited 40 minutes for our two waffles. They seemed to prioritize Door Dash orders over customers in-store. When we got our order the staff member said they had a chicken shortage, but we saw them take a full bag of chicken out of the freezer. I heard microwaving (beep beep, hum, door latch) which I’m thinking might’ve been the chicken. There was a lukewarm piece on the Chicken and Waffles, so I’m thinking that might be issue? The woman working the cash register randomly made a single waffle and then it sat there for 15-20 minutes.
Finally, there’s a lot of waste for dining in - paper plates, plastic silverware, plastic cups for drinks, small plastic cups for syrup and each customer gets multiple. I could understand it a little more with to-go orders, but that was dining in.
I think they may have opened a little too early for dining in. The mimosa was good and the dishes they’ve come up with are a great idea. They need more staff, chicken made in house, and some facility adjustments for this to be a...
Read moreThis is for the owner(s) of Granby Waffles. I thought you should know that we came in the restaurant around noon, party of 4. First, we were ignored when we walked in (from the mall entrance) We went ahead and found the menu on the wall and walked to the counter to order when we made our decision. Someone behind the counter told us to wait when we stood at the counter. Then they went and swept up food off the floor, puttered around the kitchen, then the phone rang and proceeded to answer the phone and talk to the person on the phone. Then, they put down the phone and went back to puttering, back to the counter. After seeing all this while waiting for for close to 4-5 minutes, we left. I got the impression that they could care less because they didn't even speak when we left the restaurant. We went across to Stockpot and where we were promptly spoken to, then served. I am describing this experience because I am sure the space being rented for this restaurant is expensive. I thought maybe the owners would want to know my experience with the service. My experience may not be the only time this has happened and others may be chosing to patronize elsewhere for the same reasons I did. FYI, there were two people working so we just weren't ignored by one...
