There's been an explosion of Thai restaurants in the metro area as well as Asian fusion styles. Having lived in Southeast Asia, I'm kind of particular about the quality of Asian food I eat. Oklahoma city has an Asian district and Norman has a large Asian population. Vietnamese is the second most prominently spoken language in the state. So good Asian food comes as authentically as you desire.
All that said, I decided to try Thai Thai in their new location. The service was gentle and almost not noticeable it was so well timed. The food came out clearly freshly cooked, hot as blazes. The jasmine rice was shaped in a bowl before plating, and the green curry with chicken was full of the protein as well as red and green bell peppers, bamboo shoots, and basil leaves. It was divine. I ordered the spring rolls, so that I could have things to take home as leftovers, and wound up going ahead and ordering a full order of pad thai noodles with beef just to take home. Their tom yum soup is spot on. I had it with tofu to vary my proteins, but I just finished the last of the soup last night. A Japanese lager, Sapporo, pairs perfectly with Thai food.
I will be returning to Thai Thai, in a rotation with the other Thai restaurants in the area that are also excellent. If you're in Norman, there are so many good Asian restaurants you can't go wrong. Well, as long as you don't go to someplace called happy family or some other iteration of American Chinese food. Many times that winds up all tasting the same, the proteins covered with too much dough and the sauces all sweet. Stick with Thai, you...
Read moreIf you're a non-Thai looking for a quick and spicy bite, this establishment might be worth checking out. The food is definitely flavorful and packs a punch, but just be warned – it's also quite salty. I mean, I love salt as much as the next person, but this place might have gone a little overboard. It's like they're trying to give all their customers kidney problems.
But despite the high sodium levels, the food is still pretty tasty. The flavors are bold and satisfying, and it's a great choice for anyone looking to spice up their meal. Just be prepared to chug a few glasses of water (or maybe even a gallon) to counter the saltiness.
The atmosphere is also pretty decent – it's a cozy and welcoming space, with friendly staff and a laid-back vibe. It's the perfect spot to grab a quick and spicy bite on the go.
And let's not forget about the prices – they're incredibly reasonable. I always leave feeling satisfied and full, without breaking the bank. It's a win-win in my book (as long as my kidneys can handle it).
In conclusion, if you're a non-Thai looking for a quick and spicy bite, this establishment is a good choice. Just be prepared for some high sodium levels and bring a gallon of water with you. Happy eating...
Read moreI just got back from Bangkok on an educational visa, and all I wanted was to feel at home again. Unfortunately, this isn’t the place for authentic Thai food. (Maybe the owner is Thai — I don’t know — but the flavors here are clearly toned down for American tastes, and I’m not cool with that.)
First off, the Thai tea was nowhere near the real thing. It wasn’t even mixed when it came out, and even after stirring it myself, it was still weak and watered down.
I ordered a bowl of chicken Tom Yum. I told the waiter three times — a bowl, not a pot. How do you not hear me the first two times when I was crystal clear? When the soup finally came out, it tasted like Campbell’s tomato soup with a dash of chili flakes. And since when do you not get rice with Tom Yum?
What really turned me off though — the same guy who took our order was cleaning tables with chemicals right before coming over to us. I literally watched him go back to wiping more tables and then bring out food without washing his hands once. No gloves, no handwashing, nothing....
