Everything is absolutely delicious. Try almost anything with the Candler Comeback sauce: unbelievable! The BBQ is tender, juicy, and flavorful. Occasionally, meatloaf is available which I highly recommend. On the side, mac and cheese pie is browned to perfection, certifiably lip-smackin collard greens don't sit but for a minute, and a most structurally-sound flavor powerhouse of a cornbread muffin with a complex sweetness and those wonderful edges is such a treat! I also frequently request bourban apple sauce, calico baked beans, and the stewed okra is cut CHUNKY! Amen to that!
I hold a special place for the fried cabbage and the sweet potato soufflé and will go straight for the Lexington slaw. It's tonic for the soul. It's finely shredded, peppery, and has a gentle bite and the slightest touch of sweetness that goes very well with the BBQ and the brisket or on its own okay.
The selection of sauces is a delight for all kinds of tastes, and they are all amazing, but I keep going back for the red sauce and the comeback.
I am working very slowly through the menu because the dishes are all so good. It's tough not to want to try the same things again. Also, I am in no hurry to rush food this tasty. A few things I aim to try next are the ribs and the Brunswick stew and the half chicken.
But behind it all, it's the fine people that own and operate this establishment that make a profound difference in everything. They aren't sitting up high on the mountain while their people slave away. They are on the ground smoking meat early in the morning every day and serving up customers all week long with authenticity. When they ask how's your day, you know they actually care.
This isn't any corporate chain. This is a real local business for locals and tourists alike. Everybody is welcomed and appreciated, and the food is consistently delicious every time. I have stopped by countless times and never had a single complaint, and I promise I am not scared to speak up. There just isn't anything else to say, but thanks, Doc!
Over time, I will add more photos to showcase some of my favorite moments. There is slways something I love here, but that Meatloaf may be best in Asheville. I want to eat a lot of it like a Meatloaf Goblin. It brings me straight back to my favorite dish growing up when Mom made it, except, sorry Mom, Doc's is a few steps ahead. Finish off with an apple cobbler of your dreams or some banana pudding. Come for the BBQ. Sit and enjoy the genuinely...
Read moreI don't say this lightly because as a foodie I generally have to be really impressed to say anything is extraordinary, but this place... Is absolutely incredible and blew away any other barbecue I have literally ever had!
The pulled pork was so tender so amazing and the freshest I've ever eaten, the sauces they had were delicious and we're just a slight difference between what you would normally expect in the best way possible. They're in house spicy barbecue sauce is beyond belief it is just the perfect amount of spice with a whole bunch of flavor packed into there so good that I bought a whole tub to go home with.
Every side dish we tried was amazing The ribs are huge and well worth it and while I didn't get any dessert I would imagine it would be fantastic.
The people I interacted with were extremely friendly and cool and the cashier / waiter we dealt with was an extremely cool guy and honestly I'd hang out with him outside of that place but with that being said it's cool to just see people be themselves and be cool around customers and really make sure they get what they want.
Speaking of, I was informed they do not have freezers and keep everything as fresh as possible and you can absolutely taste it in all of the food. The prices are extremely reasonable and when we went at the end of May of 2023, a pound of barbecue all done up was only $12.95 a pound which is an excellent price for what they are giving you. Add the fact that there's a drive-thru and this place just gets better and better.
If you were heading anywhere remotely close by, you ABSOLUTELY need to stop here and get some food. This was our last place on our way back home to eat and we could not have picked a better place thank you so much for the absolutely awesome...
Read moreEdited per owners response: The good: The meat was very good, the sauces that we had available on the table were amazing, and the establishment was very clean and the employees friendly. The selection of meats were good and proportioned well. The cole slaw was the best side
The bad: a little too pricey for the limited menu selection, wish they had more of a family meal, maybe something that feed 2-4. The sides need to improve as they were small and kind of bland, the backed beans were lacking in flavor and more of a bean soup, the mac and cheese pie was all noodle and some breading with a hint of cheese, tasted more like bread pudding with noddle, and the potato salad was decent (come to Tennessee and we can show real potato salad) but could have been better. Even though the sauces were amazing, there were only 3 available with none other mentioned.
Response to the owner: I understand you don't like waste I feel the same and my wording was not the best as my first review was off my phone and meant to be quick. I understand prices have gone up but I have had fuller meals and more portioned of sides with same quality or better at a more affordable price. Even though the sauces are NOT the boss they are a stapled highlight and should be plentiful (as someone who loves a good bbq and has competed before I have recipes for at least 10) example: you should always have a sweet heat mix to spice things up, not texas pete to offer. I hate that I may have missed out on more sauce flavors to try and would have loved to been introduced at my time of visit.
Would I visit again,...
