Maybe I should do two separate reviews? We went for lunch for our first visit and it was amazing. Lunch special was amazing and the portions were huge. The service was incredible. Based on our great first experience we decided to come back for breakfast. If this breakfast trip had been our first trip, we would never have come back. The meals had small portions, partly over cooked and parts were cold. I had the Jennorator. The gravy was fine but the sausage was over cooked and was cold along with the eggs. My wife had the Texas style toast which obviously has nothing to do with size. I expected Texas toast and instead the french toast seemed like regular store bought white bread. My wife said her food was lukewarm at best. Now what really bothered me was the customer service. First time was fantastic. This time we got lost in the shuffle some how. The first table they sat us at, was under an air vent, blowing cold air, so we asked to move. While we waited for a waitress to show up, another couple was sat at the same table and they asked to be moved. The staff immediately cleared two large tables for that couple. Not sure why. That couple had their drinks and their order taken before we even saw our waitress. Evidently they were friends of their waitress and got VIP service. A family of four was seated behind us and they got their drinks and ordered before us. They had a different waitress. Our waitress did eventually show and you could tell she wasn't having the best day. My biggest aggravation was that it took 15 minutes after my table was cleared of empty plates, for me to get a bill and then I had to wait for the waitress to take someone else's order before she went to ring up the order and print a reciept. My wife got tired of waiting and went out to the car. One of the most irritating things was the woman in a pink sweatshirt walking around the dining room, who appeared to be in charge or thought she was, who ignored us the whole time. It was obvious that I was sitting alone, waiting for something. Table cleared. Glass empty. And she did nothing. I tried to get her attention at one point and she walked passed me and out the front door? Cigarette break? My wife got tired of waiting and came back in, to get me, just as the waitress showed up with drinks for the other table and my receipt. If the waitress didn't have my credit card, I would have been tempted to just leave. A customer should never have to wait to leave longer than it took them to eat. The waitress only had the one other table. What was she doing all that time in...
Read moreWe’ve ordered from The Shack in the past and generally had a good experience, but unfortunately, we were very disappointed with our most recent visit. We placed a carryout order yesterday evening and, although we live only five minutes from the restaurant, the food was cold and soggy when we got home. The fries and shrimp were particularly disappointing, and the shrimp and grits were so cold we had to reheat them ourselves.
We called the next day to share our experience, hoping for a reasonable resolution. However, the manager shifted the blame onto us, saying the poor quality was because we placed our order around 7:50 PM and the restaurant closes at 8:00. We were also told that “fried food doesn’t travel well,” implying the fault was ours—even though we live just minutes away. For a $45 meal, we expected better both in food quality and in service.
If food quality is expected to decline near closing time, that should be clearly communicated at the time of ordering, ideally with a discounted price. Instead, we were met with dismissiveness and excuses.
While the manager eventually offered $15 off a future meal, it was done reluctantly and only if we chose to return. After this experience, we’re not sure that we will. We’ve vacationed in North Myrtle Beach for years, and The Shack has always been one of our go-to spots. Sadly, the lack of accountability and poor customer service we received this time has made us...
Read moreI shared with my waitress, Summer, that I had not been in over 5 years because it was my go to place with my dad. She was so sweet because I was afraid I would cry. Instead, I completely remembered all the great times I have had here, the summers I lived down here and worked as a lifeguard. Many a meal here and never disappointed. Now that we have moved to our little piece of Heaven, our go to place again. Best flounder in town. Hush puppies addictive and if you eat collards, you will think your grandmother is back in the kitchen. My husband loves the oreo pie, I am a cobbler girl. And the banana pudding should be sold by the platter!! French fries are worth my cheat day. Just a basket please!! I usually get the Cherry Grove Platter, or the dinner special. And only fried oysters in all of the Strand that you can taste the oyster. So glad my memories outweighed my concern I would be sad. And Cooper made our anniversary dinner so special. (Yes, go early for a back, cozy booth). The owner is a sweetheart and always remembered my late dad. That means so much. See you guys next...
