Ordered Chow Mein with Chicken, picked it up, ate half of it. First impressions:
The chow mein doesn't have noodles; this is the sole reason behind one of the stars I took off. I do believe (and Google seems to agree) that "mein" is a transliterated word which in Chinese means "noodle". Though I have to say this isn't the first time I've seen this from an American Chinese place. The trend is... unsettling. I love fried noodles (like wok fried, not deep fried) and lo mein just doesn't hit the same savoriness to me. This had no noodles at all.
Food is between ok and good, even though it didn't have noodles... For reference, their Chow Mein with chicken is a kind of chicken and veggies (crunchy greens and onions) stir fry with a chicken gravy, not bad but not really what I wanted or expected. It's possible the woman who took my order tried to tell me this, but I think she misunderstood when I tried to better describe what I wanted (a pan fried noodles meal--I ended up getting an added side of Crispy Noodles).
Fried rice wasn't particularly good. It was edible, but the flavor was very light. Not what I expect of fried rice.
Price is right, at least in the combos; $8ish gets you an entree, an egg roll, and pork fried rice (substitutions available). I swear it was like two pounds of food.
Fast. I live about six minutes from this place. The food was ready when I got there.
So B / B-. Might try other things from China King because the "chow mein" was good for what it was. I'm just kind of sad about my recent noodless adventure, and you probably would be too if you ordered chow mein expecting pan fried noodles and got some minimal exploration of chop suey instead. Also the lackluster fried rice didn't help much. But hey, I got a spring roll instead of an egg roll, and it was...
Read moreUsed to like this place when we first heard about it. Our only complaint is the crab rangoon. There is barely 1/2 teaspoon of cream cheese filling in each one! A decent crab rangoon should have at least a tablespoon of cream cheese filling so that you are NOT eating 7/8 wrapper compared to 1/8 filling. We thought maybe this was a one-time thing, where a different person made them and didn't know how much to put in, but the last several times we have ordered from there, they have been the same. Don't waste your money on these unless they start making them right! At roughly 60 cents per crab rangoon, surely they can add more filling. They should go down the road to No. 1 Kitchen in Elyria and try their crab rangoon--they are THE BEST and will likely be where we order from if China King if they continue to be chintzy with the filling of their...
