Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers — Restaurant in Oakland

Yeah, $20+ for a burger is a bit steep, but overall I was happy with the flavor, quality, and service for Barney’s.

This place is a cute local joint (now with several Bay locations) on the charming College Ave in Rockridge. They advertise as gourmet burgers, and they definitely are — but with all the possible toppings, be prepared to pay quite a bit for each add-on you’re interested in.

I ordered the Moroccan Burger (with sprouts) and the skinny fries, to-go. They prepped my food quickly and it gave me a few minutes to walk around the area and check out the cute cafes. It’s a short walk from the BART station, but there’s also plenty of parking on College Ave (I had no problem parking).

I’d definitely recommend the pretzel bun, as the soft and salty flavor added a unique twist to the burgers. The meat was tasty and you can specify if you want medium rare, medium, or well-done. I also liked how the toppings were overflowing — you might have to pay $3.50 to add something like crispy onions to your burger, but for that price they’ll make sure you get more than enough to fill your burger (and plate!).

Overall, it’s a nice choice for a casual burger...

Had to wait for my daughter as she has a dance class so I decided to go find something to eat. Googled restaurants nearby found Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers, I thought it sounded familiar maybe on Check Please Bay Area or Guy Fieri's show and it was only 3 minutes away great. I walked in and was warmly greeted by at least three staff members yeah this is the place for me. My beverage order was taken while we had light conversation.I started out with a half order vegetable appetizers portobello mushroom onion rings & zucchini perfectly crispy fries parmesan cheese dusted with a side of Ranch dressing. The best I've ever had! Kim my wonderful server was very attentive and truly interested in my first experience at Barneys. She allowed me to order a burger off the kids menu since my appetizer was then I expected. The burger with grilled onions and sweet potato fries was delicious. Average burgers, poor value. The french fries are fantastic, we had the seasoned curly fries. A "Full" ($7) is plenty for 2 people. The burgers however landed far short for what their name suggests. I ordered my burger medium, which the server advised means it is fully pink inside. Instead my burger was well-done, so it tasted dry and charred. I would have said something, but the server didn't come back to check for quite a while. Very poor value for $19 just for the burger.

We were also interested in the milkshakes, but we couldn't find them on the menu.

Also this restaurant is not a counter serve joint, despite what the Google Maps descriptions says. So be prepared for a full sit-down experience.

Bummed because this place had been on my list to try for a while. Overall, we might come back for if we're in the mood for fries, or perhaps to try the shakes. But certainly not...
