The Oakland location has lots of available parking on the street in close proximity to the restaurant, especially if you go at 11:30 for lunch.
You will get a strong whiff of all those seasonings cooking as you approach, in my book this always means good food will follow.
They have a nice area for outside seating, but be careful of the bike lane, make sure you look before you cross into the restaurant or you might walk right into a 10 speed!
The staff was very accommodating to my cousin with a wheelchair, they easily moved seating to ensure she had adequate space and was comfortable. I didn’t need to taste the food after this display of kindness, I knew I was in good culinary hands!
The bathrooms are clean with a hint of cleaning product in the air, they are also spacious and pleasant even though they are unisex because I am not a fan of sharing restrooms with men. So yes, it is safe to use the bathroom here!
The decor of the space has a family friendly feeling, with artwork that reminds you a trip to Burma should be on your travel bucket list!
The menu has several selections but it’s not overwhelming, and accommodates all preferred diets. Vegetarians, and vegans this is a haven for you, lots of fruits and vegetables in these dishes, so please don’t shy away!
I like restaurants that take a break between lunch and dinner, they usually do an extra bit of cleaning in my opinion. They close for lunch at 2:30 and open for dinner at 5pm during the week. This place gets packed, so plan to go early, and they only take reservations for parties of 8 or more!
The food is eye appealing, you can taste the dish before you have your first bite, I love a beautifully displayed plate!
If you find yourself in Oakland, I highly recommend grabbing a meal at Burma Superstar, have the Tea Leaf Salad, Egg Curry With Okra, and Coconut Rice. Sip a hot Fresh Ginger Honey Tea, while you enjoy the loving energy and artwork that make the setting as unique as the...
Read moreA friend and I made a quick detour into Oakland to check out Burma Superstar on our last trip to the bay, and it was absolutely worth the time.
The restaurant has a reputation for having excellent food and a solid dining experience and it didn't disappoint. It's in a nice part of Oakland, and if you're lucky you might just be able to find a parallel parking spot nearby! Pro Tip: Use the Yelp app to put yourself in line if you're going at a busy time! When I went, we didn't realize this was an option, but luckily we went on a weeknight and there wasn't much of a crowd so we were inside the restaurant within 10 minutes of arrival. Even if you're stuck outside for a bit, they have benches and heaters outside so you aren't uncomfortable.
Now onto the food...I can honestly say that I didn't dislike anything I had to eat at Burma Superstar (an accomplishment, I promise!). I had the Spicy Noodles as my main dish, and the Salt and Pepper Calamari as my starter -- both excellent options. The coconut rice is a nice amount of coconut flavor while maintaining the innate sweetness therein as well. One thing to note, the Samusas are NOT to be confused with Samosas (Indian). The taste is different, but I can see some relation as the execution is similar. Not a food item, but added bonus: they have coconut water in-coconut! They'll crack the coconut and add a straw for you, and at the end of the night, they'll also completely break the coconut for you to be able to eat the meat if you'd like.
Overall, I have 0 hangups in saying that Burma Superstar does live up to the hype you've been hearing about it -- go...
Read moreThis food is fantastic. Burmese food is (to me) as if Chinese food decided to let in a few Thai and Indian spices into its palette. This is a wonderful restaurant for the food, which outweighs some of the service failings.
If there is one takeaway you MUST get the tea leaf salad. It is a unique group of spices and both light and fulfilling. My wife and I also got the mint leaf chicken, coconut rice, and garlic noodle sides. It was so good I forgot to take pictures of the dishes.
Very reasonable pricing for the area - mains about $18 and apps from 9 to 13. Order a big salad first and split ine main with some rice or noodles (we got both) and you will do great. Our dinner was $30 a head with tax and tip.
Any issues? Yes. There is almost always a wait. Plan and anticipate accordingly. You leave your name at the host stand, and they text you when your table is ready. This is totally fine and you can walk around the cool neighborhood, but not for those who are super hungry and want to eat immediately.
The service is only okay. Servers are nice and courteous, but it took 10 to 15 min for us to be asked for our order, and we had no follow up throughout the meal. I had to also wave somebody down to just ask for our check. It’s a product of being so busy because the food is amazing, and it’s not enough to move down a star,.....but it almost is. Add one or two more servers and there will be much fewer instances of inconsistent wait times.
This is five though because the food is amazing. Full stop. Great date spot and something to impress family when they...
