The Avenue Bar — Restaurant in Oakland

After a few good visits, I can no longer recommend this as the chill place I once perceived it as. While I don't want to fault the owners or employees, who are always pleasant and accommodating, it's the self described "locals" who won't hesitate to make a situation uncomfortable.

Want a good dive bar experience without hassle? Go to Wolfhound or somewhere other than The Avenue.

To be more detailed, a friend of mine sat in front of a small ring toss game on a packed Friday night. After getting a ring thrown at her a few times, and without being asked to move, a man forcefully pulled stool out from where my friend was sitting. When she asked why this man did so, he replied that she, "was in the way of my game". The "locals" prided themselves on standing up for their bar, however, offered no useful advice for upholding any decency and told my friend she was in the way. Because they "didn't recognize us", they were okay with a man harassing a woman because he wanted to throw a ring on a hook.

I was charged for someone elses drinks but Accidents happen. As i clarified my order, the bartender interrupts me saying "are you gonna let me talk?" only to realize he indeed double charged us. Since he was rude and aggressive, i asked for the cash back.

THEN he yelled "youre not gonna tip me?!" After i already put cash on the table that the other bar tender took.

As im speechless in shock, the woman bar tender starts telling me i have to get over it. Meanwhile, friends and strangers are staring at me asking if im ok.

How poorly is a person treated by staff before strangers and friends ask if youre "good?"

Bartender is extremely rude. Unpleasant greeting and terrible customer service. I got a cider, had a few sips and then realized there was mold on the rim of the can right where I was drinking from!!! I got up to inform the bartender who ignored me standing at the entrance for 2 minutes. When he finally decided to acknowledge me I told him politely what the issue was and he continued to brush me off and go on to arrange some chairs outside instead of handling the situation. He then walked back when he was finished and took the can out of my hand very rudely without saying anything. No apology, not a word about it. Told me to order food and that was it.
