Ladyfingers Bakery — Restaurant in Oakland

I really wanted to like this place. I really did! So much so that I went there a second time after a terrible pastry. The first time, I got a cupcake that looked really good, but as soon as I bit into it I was sorely disappointed. It was hard and stale and the frosting was oily and tasteless. I chalked it up to a bad batch since my friends told me their pastries are great, and my experience was a one off.

I went back today and met a lovely cashier who whipped me up a vanilla cupcake with buttercream frosting. She said the cupcakes are made the day before and the frosting is made the day of. Well, with all that preparation I still had a less than mediocre cupcake. It was still a bit dry and had had chewy pieces on the top. The frosting was still very oily, and not very sweet. I ended up taking the whole top off and just eating the bottom. Bleh.

Overall, nice service but I wouldn’t recommend coming here for baked goods. Whole Foods does a better job at a comparative price.

Ive been here on three separate occasions and really loved their apple crisp, Russian tea cakes, and other goodies. I recently went to get an apple pie-lette (its like a cute little 4" pie) and cupcakes for a friend's birthday which was a mistake. Before stepping out the door, the cupcakes instantly fell over. Who packages cupcakes like this (see picture)?

Edit 11/18 I went back to the shop and told the lady at the front what happened. She was really understanding - offered to get me a new, padded box (she stuffed the sides with parchment paper), replace the cupcakes, and even threw in an extra one. My first time today trying their cookies. I paid close to 9 for three. A bit pricey, I was looking for oatmeal cookies but I’m not sure if theirs were over baked because they looked like flat crisps so I said never mind. I got snickerdoodles, the cookies were hard and crisp, not the consistency I was expecting of a snickerdoodle, but the taste was ok. The chocolate shortbread was not good, according to my sons face ( a super chocolate everything lover).
