It is maintained by the city and two enthusiastic volunteer women, who attending the Garden through the year. Entrance to the Garden is a bit obscure, though it is located only one block from Grant str. When you get to Rose Gardens you will be impressed two Roman colonades on both sides of the entrance, behind a turnaround for cars dropping off visitors and if you want to park the car, there's plenty parking on local streets. People resting and pickniking on the grass among the Rose Bushes. As you pass comfort station on the left, you come to beautiful pond with water lilies, and a veranda with a white columns, inside is an information board, announcing activities. I came to hear a concert of Angelique Alexander, opera singer, also a teacher in Oakland school district. Concert area reminds of Roman amphitheater beatifyed by Rose Bushes, Grass and trees. There are benches for attendees. Midway in the park you would see cascading water fountain. Read moreThe Oakland Rose Garden is a low key must see amphitheater. During the right time of year, hundreds of roses are blooming. During winter, it's still a beautiful place to walk.
If you're a glutton for exercise, there is a long set of stairs to run up and down, and any time of the day you'll see people doing just that.
Alternately, there are sloping curving paths taking you around the outside of the gardens.
Beware: this is not a wheelchair friendly venue, there's some stairs along all paths, but less than a dozen in some places.
If you are lucky, you'll run into some neighborhood celebrities: Grayson, the friendly gray cat that patrols the gardens. Or the four large turkeys (Tom = male, who often displays for his gals. Rose = mom. Jenny = their baby). I'm not sure who the recent 4th is (daughter or potential mate) but these are the titles of the type of turkey, not unique nicknames.
Bring a tea to sip, snacks to munch or just bring your phone for pictures.
