Pros: The price was very reasonable compared to other Japanese restaurants in the area. My wife placed an online order, so we didn't eat there, but the restaurant looked pretty nice inside.

Cons: they were somewhat busy and appeared understaffed. Maybe the food quality is better when they are less busy, but unfortunately, our experience tonight was extremely disappointing. My wife ordered sushi and barely touched 2 out of the 3 rolls. She said the Philadelphia roll was decent, but the other two (spider/California roll) were not very good. I had their chicken hibachi meal, which was edible, but nothing that I would want to try again. I feel like that was cooked much earlier than the sushi, so it sat around getting cold/mushy while you waited to make the sushi for our order...likely because you had multiple customers inside also ordering sushi and again, seemed understaffed. They messed up and put yum yum sauce in my salad, so I ended up mixing that in versus the yellow dressing they had in the bag. My wife ordered the avocado salad and it was missing the cucumbers/carrots. The "clear soup" was brown...very different than any others I have had in the past. I also made the mistake of ordering the crab rangoons, which definitely were not cooked long enough and were still very hard (versus crispy). The fried rice was pretty good, but underseasoned.

I see in other reviews that we could have come back and got a refund. But after waiting so long to get the food (took around 50 min...which I understand you all take longer to prepare food and that is totally fine), but after waiting that long I dont expect to have multiple issues with my food. After waiting, driving home, trying everything...I honestly don't feel like waiting another hour to get all the food re-made in hopes of it tasting better. I really wanted to like this place because it's relatively close to our house. But you guys missed the mark on basically everything tonight.

I'm giving 2 stars because my chicken hibachi meal was edible, but again, nothing that made me want to come back again. I truly hate leaving negative reviews, but I also feel that I needed to give honest feedback based on our experience tonight.

Edit - Thanks for the response. I understand running a business is hard. I also understand being busy and things taking longer. It just doesn't make up for the $55 we spent on a disappointing meal. It's Friday, it has been a long week and I was looking forward to some good food! I would have rather waited longer if that meant you had the time to properly make our order. I see other people like your food and had good experiences, but it is gonna be hard for me to ever want to come back and give you another chance. Again, not trying to be negative, but also want to be honest. I hope things get better...

Nijis is a hole in the wall treasure!!! It doesn't look like much, but what it lacks in physical appearance it makes up for 10 fold in service, and absolutely delicious, but reasonably priced food!! The place is absolutely clean, and pleasant. My husband, and I just walk in there and they ALWAYS know our order, and it's not a place we go to regularly so that's super impressive!! Their servers are delightful, and sweet. I honestly can't think of anything bad to say about this place. It's decor is just meh, but with how excellent and impressive they are in all other areas you don't even notice.

(02-14-2020) Update: Nijis had done a sprucing up within the last year. They are such a wonderful place I really felt the need to give credit where credit is due! Their service is still above standard. I feel like I am going to have a meal at a dear friends house that is how warm their service is. I LOVE the decor remodel! It was exactly what the place needed, and they achieved the perfect environment without going over the top. Everything is very beautiful. The velvet whale wall paper, to the beautiful umbrellas that help brings depth from the shadows cast by the lighting. You can eat there in your Sunday best or in your Pajamas and feel not out of place either way. Nijis you continue to impress. Great job on the decor, you guys...

I ordered the lunch sushi. It was edible although not very good. The pieces were pretty small in size and it was warm when it should have been cold so that was concerning. The sushi also lacked flavor which was shocking. I ordered the crunchy shrimp roll and the spicy crab roll. The miso soup was terrible as was the salad. The carrots were turning brown and clearly not fresh. I also ordered crab Rangoon. That was ok. Those were honestly the best part of the meal. The waitress was disinterested and it was quite noticeable. On our way out we said bye and she didn't even look up and barely got a sentence out. She just kept scrolling on her phone. I would not recommend this place for sushi. Unfortunately due to my overall experience I am not interested in even returning to try something else.

Update: Do to your unprofessionalism in your response as an owner you now get all 1's. There are better sushi lunch specials in JOCO. The waitress never apologized because we never said anything to her and your restaurant only had 4 guests to include us...

Edit 4/27/2019: A few minor changes have made a big difference. Decorative umbrellas on the lights add a nice cultural flare while making the light soft and indirect. Some new wall art, updated booths/chairs, and even some bathroom remodeling have vastly improved the feel of dining in. No caveats anymore: this is my favorite sushi place in Johnson County. Original review: Our sushi go-to, to go The food is fantastic and the service is pleasant. The atmosphere is calm and quiet and the decorations are well balanced between east and west. The specials have local ties and we've never had an issue with to-go orders on phone or in person. That said, it is part of a strip mall and the eastern polish doesn't quite overcome the drop ceilings for atmosphere. I can't rate highly enough for carry out, but would think twice about dining in.

NIJI has the best sushi selection and prices in the Gardner/Olathe area!! I so wish they were open on Sundays though! Every few weeks I order 6-9 rolls online to bring home for my family -- I was surprised the first time I ordered because when I arrived 15-20 minutes after ordering they were still working on my order. They were apologetic and explained that they were busy and large orders like mine take longer to make (they usually only have 1-2 people making sushi). Now I'm used to it, I'll order online 30-45 minutes before arriving to pick it up. I don't even mind though -- it is well worth the wait, their sushi is so fresh and delicious! Our favorites are Spicy Santa Roll, Spicy Crab Roll, and Shrimp Tempura Roll!
