It has been two years since I posted my review of our experience at Julian's, and now having been back countless times (last night being the latest), I am moved to write again to encourage everyone to try the delicious food and warm welcome and service from Julian and his staff. We took our friends from Vancouver, B.C who visit us 3-4 times a year and a visit is not complete without a lunch or dinner at Julian's. Upon arriving, you're greeted by the most delicious, freshly-made and still warm tortilla chips, along with their sensational salsa. The meals have been consistently wonderful, especially the Camarones Cabrones, 20 perfectly cooked shrimps in a spicy sauce with caramelized onions, the Tacos Gobernador, their first-prize winning Ceviche, their Chicken Taquitos, and of course, the outstanding aguachiles. The portions are very generous and can easily be shared by those at the table. These dishes are so good that we rarely venture into other choices on their extensive menu, but looking around at other tables, we see lots of satisfied customers eating other dishes, like fajitas and burritos. The prices are reasonable and Julian and the staff go out of their way to accommodate their guests, with excellent service, kindness, and sincere appreciation for having chosen to eat there. There is no shortage of Mexican restaurants in Oxnard, but for us, the great food and attention to fresh ingredients and creative recipes set Julian's apart as our favorite place when we want Mexican cuisine. We had dinner at Julian’s Aguachiles this evening and it was absolutely delicious. We found street parking just outside the restaurant and no wait to be seated. The exterior to the establishment is nice and clean as is the inside which is a plus. We were greeted by wait staff who took great care of us throughout our visit. We were given freshly made corn tortilla chips and salsa which was good. We prefer very hot salsa and were not disappointed with what they brought out for us. We enjoyed Caldo de Albóndigas (meatball and vegetable soup) and Camarones “La Diabla”. The caldo came in piping hot as it should be. The flavor to the soup was perfect, vegetables cooked to perfection, meatballs were sizable and the flavor was what I expect from those cooked by a Mexican grandma. The soup came with a side of onion, cilantro, lemon wedge and freshly made corn tortillas. We also had Camarones “La Diabla” which were accompanied by white rice, garlic bread, side salad and french fries. The spicy sauce which accompanied the shrimp was plentiful and was thoroughly enjoyed with every beautifully butterflied shrimp. The rice was well cooked with just the right amount of flavors. I appreciated the staff being attentive without being overbearing. The owners of the establishment made their rounds as well to thank customers for dining in. After trying the complimentary salsa while waiting, we knew the aguachile was going to be good. The aguachile did not disappoint! Very flavorful, great spice. Whole cucumber, tomato, & avocado slices & plenty of tostadas helped cool down each bite to be able to go back for more. The ceviche pescado that came with the aguachile was also good. It was nice to be able to try both the aguachile & the ceviche for our first time here. My husband also had the Diablo burrito, but decided we would probably skip next time. The shrimp inside of the burrito were large & cooked well, but the burrito was mostly white rice with some carrots & peas & the sauce on top of the burrito was much sweeter than we thought it would be. My husband likened it to a sweet BBQ sauce. The woman who was our server was extremely nice & personable.
