Big Pig seems to be a friendly cozy New England BBQ spot in Peabody which started off as a catering only business. I accompanied a friend of mine here on a sat afternoon who was doing a marketing collab with them and got to meet a few people running the show. Pitmaster Tony was such a nice guy and gave us a great tour of their offerings and we got to know how they started just before covid hit. The brisket and the stuffed jalapeño wrapped in bacon were the stars. Had a nice juicy brisket after a long time and I see myself stopping by whenever I am traveling up north of Boston.
I was not a fan of their bourbon and maple glazed pork belly as they were really sweet however having it with their hot bbq sauce helped cut down the sweetness to some extent.
The ribs were good and tender too however felt a tad bit dry by the time we ate it. Not sure if it was because we had it in the end. Maybe have it as soon as it's served. The coleslaw was however a bit overloaded with mayo and the crunch of the cabbage and carrots were lost.
They do have 5 different bbq sauce from sweet to hot of varying levels and none of them were ketchupy which was such a happy relief. Most of the bbq sauce turns out to be too much ketchup mixed with paprika but theirs was really balanced.
The food they serve do show their care and passion about bbq and can't wait to go back however this times it's gonna be around 11/11:30 AM right when they work their pits to catch those chunks of meat coming out hot.
They are also going to open up a drive through which is going to be a great addition. A drive through bbq place for take out? Will take it any day. Definitely recommend them to one and all of you are in Peabody area or even if it's...
Read moreFood was good, service was decent not because of the one kid they sent, but because they sent one kid alone. They should have sent at least two people for a party of 40 ppl. They setup this one kid for failure as he was alone and he required help! We had to help him out putting up the tent, anchoring the tent, carrying some large items from van as well as popping open the small portable fire heaters for keeping food warm. For a service totaling over $2100, we should not have to do anything but tend to our guests and mingle with our guests. When I booked the event, I was told that for 40 people, set up would be about 20 minutes and we were expecting to eat by 5:30pm. Instead the van showed up late and setup took more like 40 minutes and ended up eating closer to 630pm. As a result of this some guests who had to leave early left without eating. After the event, I reached out to let them know what happened. I was told that there was a last minute staffing problem and they were unable to send two people for service. I was offered the service fee “money back”, which if you ask me was a joke. $262 discount out of total of over $2100 is pathetic. Additionally why didn’t they call me ahead of time to let me know that they were having a staffing problem and they were sending only one person to give us a heads up. Ultimately, if they really care about providing a good service someone from the company should have stepped in to help. You can’t expect one kid to do it all on his own and have customers or guests help and then give them such a small discount. We were expecting complete full service but were ultimately very...
Read moreGreat authentic BBQ. I'm from the South, so I know good BBQ, and this is definitely some of the best in the area. Pricey for what you get, though. Four meals with non-alcoholic beverages cost us just over $100, and one of those meals was a sandwich. Wish they had a kid's menu too; who wants to pay $27 for their child to pick at a full size entree? The iced tea was cloudy - too many tannins, but it tasted ok. They only had two packets of sugar and one packet of sweet and low (yuk) when we asked for sweetener for our tea; they need to up their game in that department. We tried most of the sides, and they were incredible, especially the mac and cheese; however, if you are used to Southern-style collards, these may be unexpectedly sweet for you, but they still taste great. The smoked meats are as good, if not better, as any you'll find down South - so good that we didn't want to ruin them with sauce. A huge downside is that there are only 4 tables, 3 of which seat 2-3 people each, and 1 counter with 5 seats, so the place is nano-small inside - be prepared to wait for a table even mid-afternoon. I know they just opened, but we hope they move to bigger digs, because you'll never get a seat during dinner hours. We live about a half hour away - too far to drive there and back just for takeout, so we'll have to go there at weird times to have a shot at a seat. One huge plus - the smoked meat is naked, so you can choose one of the five sauces, or keep it commando if you don't want the carbs from the sauce. Overall, these guys are so good that they could hold their...
