Today was my first time eating at Killens Burgers since having bookmarked it sometime back. Directions to the restaurant couldn't be any easier... Great location for anyone coming from any side of Houston 👍
I ordered a cheese burger + jalapeños (which I am told is 8oz), crinkle fries and a bottled soda for a total of $15.00. I would say that's a reasonable price for a meal like this.
Cheese burger 🍔 - Tasty but unremarkable. It's very similiar to Prince's Hamburgers if they are even still in business in Houston. Don't get me wrong... It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good. The potato bun seemed chalky and dry (as all potato buns do) and the burger meat was fried which I am not a fan of. The meat was also burdened with no flavor, nothing unique or special. I did like the toppings though.. The lettuce and tomato were beautiful and the Killens sauce (think Zaxbys) was pretty good on the side with the fries.
Crinkle fries 🍟- how can anyone mess this up? They were great and dusted with salt perfectly. I recommend eating them with the Killens sauce on the side.
Soda 🥤 - The Big Red Cream Soda is always a winner, with cane sugar. .
Miscellaneous - a place that prides itself as a Houston and Texas destination (Wyatt pictures and signatures abound) should also offer a special ketchup, like Whataburger Spicy Ketchup, in my opinion. I liked the simple interior layout and loved the ceiling fans. I came during an odd hour (3pm weekday) so it wasn't packed but I am not sure if this place gets packed at all. Parking is clean and orderly.
Will I return? Probably not. There are better local choices (Tookies) and Houston choices (Stanton and Lankford, just to name a few) in my opinion. I would even go so far as to say that Pappas or Fuddruckers would be a consideration over the...
Read moreAfter several months of waiting for the lines to die down, I finally got to try Killen's Burgers! When you first walk in, you get that vintage diner feel along with some of the classics playing over the speakers. You walk up to the counter to place your order and pay and they call your name when your order is ready to be picked up. Beverages and condiments are all self-serve, and you also seat yourself. There is plenty of seating inside, as well as some covered seating outside, and the restaurant itself is clean. I didn't have much interaction with the staff outside of ordering my food, but they were friendly enough.
The food itself is pretty good. The burgers are cooked the way you request it and they're pretty big 10oz burger patties on soft fresh burger buns. They also add Killen's special sauce to the burgers (mayo/ketchup/miracle whip/relish mixture) unless you opt out of it. There are a variety of fries to choose from as well as the fried cheese curds and onion rings. Flavor-wise, the burgers are really good, especially with all of the fixins and the special sauce. The meat itself didn't have as much flavor, so the flavor from the fixins is what makes it really good. The burgers are a little on the expensive side, but you will be full for a few hours if you can finish it all in one sitting, so it's definitely worth it.
I'll definitely be back to try some of the other specialty burgers and sides, and I still need to try the shakes. I'm just glad it's easy to drop by and get a quick bite to...
Read moreMy mom wanted to go here for her Bday dinner and I obliged. The dining room was probably 50% full when we arrived and there was a short line to order at the counter. I waited in line to order while she went and grabbed a booth. Counter service was friendly; ordered two burgers, hand cut fries and onion rings and some fountain drinks $36 after tip.
Go to the booth and see there seems to be some delays in the kitchen. Burgers are up in the pass and just sitting there. Some folks make multiple trips to the counter to see where their food is at. Orders start to slowly trickle out but there was confusion as the person calling out orders could hardly be heard over the dining room noise. Finally I can see that our order is in the pass as the folks in front of us ordering had gotten their food. And I wait and I wait and finally my name is called.
I go to the counter and I’m being handed two burger trays with no onions rings and no fries. They have apparently run out of onion rings and waiting on fries. They will call my name when the fries are ready and supposedly credit my card for the onion rings. So I return to the booth but now orders are coming out with fries and I’m still waiting for ours? Not a good look in my opinion.
The food was good but the disarray of the kitchen was off putting. There are better burger options in the Clear Lake Area...
