o disappointing. In looking at some of the more recent reviews where the star count is pretty low it seems like I am going to be repeating what's already been said; but probably the biggest difference between those people and myself is that I'm a professional chef. I was really excited to come into Central Texas BBQ today, but was quickly disappointed in seeing how much I was going to have to pay for lunch $12.95 absolutely ridiculous!
I got the lunch special which included one meat Choice two sides and a drink again for $12.95 just crazy high price. Upon sitting down and starting in on the baked beans I immediately got back up and return them as the taste and look was unmistakeably canned baked beans. I spoke to the manager about it his facial expression to my statement that they tasted like they just came out of a can seemed very offended. My only response to that is, sorry guy but if you're going to cut corners, I'm going to call you out on it!
I requested a replacement side of mac and cheese which also was clearly not made with love and care simple elbow macaroni made in an extremely runny cheese sauce. Come on people it's not that hard to make a delicious cheese bechamel sauce. It's extremely inexpensive and you can bake the mac and cheese dish and it will come out amazing.
The only saving grace these people have is there BBQ while I only tried the slice brisket I can tell that it was smoked well, very moist, and the barbecue sauce that came with it is housemaid. The potato salad that I got as my other side was very bland in flavor, you can tell that it was house-made but whoever's making it needs to try a new recipe. There's so many different things that you can do with potato salad, time to be more creative! This tasted like something I got from Kroger grocery store.
Finally the dining room looks extremely junkie and like it hasn't been cleaned since these guys first opened in 1969. It's time to take all the clutter down take, all the random family pictures down and from underneath the plastic panel on each of the dining room tables ,,and replace them with new modern fixtures and new modern seating. While this atmosphere may have been charming for people three decades ago, for a new type of modern clientele, especially younger people it's not going to do the trick.
The only reason that this review is getting one Star is because the staff was friendly the manager was accommodating and the barbecue was decent. I think it's time for the management and owners to seriously reevaluate the menu and prices and think about the quality of food that you're putting out as well as doing a major overhaul and cleaning the dining room and probably the kitchen area and bringing in new updated modern fixtures to breathe new life into...
Read moreWorst BBQ I've ever eaten! My entire group felt the same way. I travel frequently and have eaten out in every state in the U.S. and this was the worst food I've ever had and I had to wait in line for 40 minutes!! Everyone in my group each ordered the 2 meat lunch special. It included 2 meats, 2 sides, 1 dessert and a drink for 14.95. I was given 2 very small pices of pork ribs (about 2 1/2 inches long by 1/2 wide and 1/4 inch thick), a decent sized portion of pulled pork, mac n cheese, green beans and big chunk of texas chocolate brownie cake. The pork ribs were mainly bone with small amounts of tough stringy meat..the pulled pork was decently tender yet quite salty..both meats had very runny, watery tasting BBQ sauce with an after taste of vinegar..I prefer a vinegar based BBQ sauce but this was horrible and watered down and it was the only BBQ sauce they had..most every BBQ joint I've been too has a nice variety BBQ sauce..you couldn't even taste any smoke flavor in the meat!! Now isn't that and the sauce a huge part of what makes BBQ so good? The mac n cheese was bland but by far the most edible savory item..it didn't have a cheesy flavor but was saucy..green beans were soggy, bland and looked as if they came from a can..after tasting how terrible my food was I looked at the rest of my party and they began voicing their displeasure with their meals too..we all tasted each other's and found it all to be bad..I was really looking forward to the large chunk of chocolate brownie cake..I LOVE chocolate and had high hopes for a good dessert..it did have some nice pecans on top of the frosting..the frosting wasn't too bad, what little of it there was but the brownie cake was dry and bland..ugh..hopes dashed..brownie cake should be moist or at least tasty..I did taste the pecan pie and it was okay..I really don't understand the good reviews and wonder if they are fake? I wish someone would've warned me before my group wasted money on such a terrible lunch! I very rarely write reviews, but felt compelled to help others that may be considering...
Read moreI have eaten here 3-4 times over the last decade. I live right down the street. Honestly it's always kind of horrible but my mom really wanted to try it.
Mom had the baked potato with chopped beef. Portion was huge but lacking flavor... See below.
The good: meat is tender. Lots of side choices. Ribs slip out of the bone and you can cut brisket with a spoon. No flavor, but at least it's tender.
Cornbread was light fluffy and well cooked, on point. Pickles were standard sliced Dill, definitely nothing special
The bad.... Low effort bbq and little flavor. This is not an exaggeration, I think somebody in the kitchen is allergic to salt because because absolutely nothing has any flavor.
The sauce is basically watery ketchup thatwas shown a picture of spices once when it was young. It looks like barbecue sauce but it's not really even worthy of french fries. Much less brisket.
Smoked sausage was like it was fresh off the shelf at Walmart... No flavor.
The peach cobbler everybody seems to rave about is basically a box of cake mix mixed with a couple of cans of sliced peaches and my guess is they put it in a crock pot... Again with no salt because it was barely sweet.
Collard greens look great and I could tell somebody put some effort in but because of absolutely no salt, it had a flavor like earthy.... Water?
It didn't look like the mac and cheese was out of a box but it did look like they opened some elbow macaroni, forgot to strain out the extra water and threw in some velvita.... But I'm confused because Velveeta has salt and their mac and cheese did not.
I understand I'm talking a lot about salt here. I promise I'm not obsessed with salt but food does have to have some level of sailine content for us to detect flavor. It's not present here.
That's ridiculous given the options they offer, and 20 to $30 a plate.
Two stars because at least they got the brisket in the ribs tender even if they...
