It was a Friday night.
I had family in from out of state, and all week, I had been talking up the Oil Lamp's large, flavorful tender ribeye steak. Did I mention it melt in your mouth?!! So we were really looking forward to the ribeye! By the time I got off work, cleaned up, changed, and arrived at 7:00 p.m., it and all of the other steaks were sold out. Not everyone gets off work at 4 or 5. To say we were very disappointed is an understatement.
So we made due with the standard foods on the line.
The employees: The young servers on the line were impersonal, had no smiles, and one even rolled her eyes while plating my choices. On a positive note, the more mature ladies in the dining room were all friendly, offered easy conversation and smiles, and were very attentive.
The food (which is usually top notch): The roast beef was dry even with the gravy. The meatloaf, which is usually so good and a nice size, tasted overcooked and was small and thin. My dessert of coconut pie was not its usual smoothness. It had a grainy texture, which I swapped out for the apple pie with caramel drizzle - it was fabulous!
The atmosphere: It is an easy family table setting. The restaurant was a little over half full. The noise level from all of the individual conversations was quite loud. In order to be heard, I had to increase my volume, which in turn domino affected the conversations around me.
Ms. Judy, who I know runs a tight ship, was nowhere to be seen, and I wonder if this was the reason for my experience.
Will I go back? You better believe it! And. I know the experience will...
Read moreAnyone who's eaten here will probably say the same thing which is this place is possibly the best quality food you can buy for such a ridiculously cheap price. I mean seriously they'd be better off raising their costs simply due to the fact that if someone had never been to, or heard about the place and they saw the prices online they'd probably think it must be pretty trashy food or just a dump in general if that's all they're charging. And ohhh would they be wrong! Not to mention they could potentially kick the bucket one day not even realizing they had just missed out on one of the most satisfying dining experiences of their existence. And all that would just be very sad. So basically what's important to get out of this review is not that I want to pay more for amazing food, but I would just be failing my fellow man if I did not point this paradox in cost vs. value being performed by the owners of the Oil Lamp Restaurant. Oh yeah the desserts are probably even better than any female in any persons family tree has up their sleeve .. even if its their 97 year old great gam gam. Who's homemade vanilla ice cream served over a delectable peach crumble cobbler is so amazing they have kept her out of assisted living even knowing that her severe alzheimers clearly means she has no clue what country she's in nevermind recall a family recipe. So go eat at the Oil Lamp because its good food and also don't be selfish anymore, place your gam gam in a nice facility and just visit her...
Read moreWe were having an educators training in Perry at the Board of Education. When we broke for lunch, I was the only one of my 4 colleagues familiar with the area. So they asked me for suggestions. So I decided on The Oil Lamp. As we were placing our order we all asked for our food to be served in to-go boxes because we didn’t think we had enough time to dine in since we only had an hour lunch break. After we all got our food we saw that we had 30 minutes so we decided sit and eat our lunch in the restaurant. As we were gathering our things to leave, a gentleman came to us and said, I want yall to know if you ask for to-go plates and eat in the restaurant we’re going to charge you 10%. I attempted to explain our reason for getting the to-go plates. He then said it again, if you get a to-go plate and eat inside you will be charged 10%. We left the restaurant shortly afterwards. My colleagues said, the food was good, but their complaints were, for $25 they got such small portions. And, as for our experience, it should be our prerogative to order our food in to go plates and eat it wherever we choose. If we paid $25 for the food we should be able to take the leftovers with us. This was very poor welcoming customer service for me and my colleagues who were visiting your establishment for the first time. Dine in or carry out, in take out plates or dine in plates, the customer should be welcomed to enjoy food as...
