Castaways — Restaurant in Phoenix

It is sad when you've been going to a place for 30 years and felt like family (lots of good meals and drinks) and all of a sudden the cook that has made all your meals plenty of times in the past now moves up to be a bartender and now over charges you so he can thicken his pockets. He now thinks he has all this Authority to serve you at his time ( yes i waited 10 mins before he acknowledged me ) when he wants to and disrespect you because you are Mexican ( Dark Skin) All I'm saying if you have color to your skin think twice before going to this place but if you do and you see a skinny Caucasian bartender be prepare for bad service. I wish I knew his name but he used to be the cook. And I honestly wish I could take my one star away. And to the owner bring back the nice girl bartenders that used to acknowledged you when you first walked...

I have been coming to Castaways since it's grand opening (almost 3 years). I am somewhat biased on this review so take it for what it is worth. There have been ok bartenders here and there have been fantastic bartenders. This is the place to come if you like a low key, Cheers, type of vibe. The regulars are very friendly and quick to invite newcomers to sit with them. The karaoke host has one of the largest libraries in Arizona. To address the review listing him as a negative to the bar- there should be a separate review written for him. Castaways is a Sports and Sand Bar, not solely a karaoke bar. So if youare the selfish type to think it's all about you, be prepared to be let down a lot in life. This place is an exception, specifically because it isn't exceptional. It's perfect.

It won't bog you down with its exceptionalism and it will leave you feeling impressed. It's that certain duality that makes it perfect and awesome. Nice view in a part of town where that shouldn't be its schtick. Fantastic service in a bar you don't expect it. People are the right degree of friendly, but they don't make it awkward.

It's easier to say what it isn't. It's not exceptional but it's awesome. It's not a sports bar, Italian restaurant, or hidden dive. But it is.
