Friends brought us here for brunch yesterday. Beautiful little cafe on a side street in Pittsboro. Very warm and inviting atmosphere.
They were busy, but not too busy, when we arrived. All of the outside tables were taken but we were fine with the inside table we found right away. You order at the counter and get a number for your table. I think they were on the backend of a busy time so food delivery was a little slow but we weren't in a hurry and enjoyed our wait time just having nice conversation. I did get a Turkish coffee to enjoy before brunch and it was quite nice.
The meals were good. Not great. Average but of good quality. My eggs were cooked perfectly but the toast was barely toasted and they forgot to bring the side of bacon I ordered. They think very highly of their bacon (based on the description and price)... but it wasn't all that -- just pretty average bacon that was undercooked (at least for me --- I like a good crisp on my bacon and this bacon was still kinda soft with some fat that really could have used some more time on the grill). If I return, i'll be sure to ask for it "crispy." The smash potatoes were pretty darned good.
One of my friends was particularly looking forward to the lemon ricotta pancakes. Again, they were good (he let me taste them) but not great. Good flavor but pretty dense. He ordered a full order so he could share with the rest of the table and a full order came with a tiny cup of syrup that would work for maybe 1/3 the number of pancakes that come on a full order. He ordered more syrup and got it quickly.
My wife's grilled cheese? Again, good. Great? No. Again with the "underdone" as the bread wasn't the nice golden brown you'd expect on a grilled cheese --- kinda had a barely toasted look to it.
Don't get me wrong, we enjoyed our food and our visit and there's a chance i'd stop in again but it certainly isn't going to be high on my list and my expectations have definitely...
Read moreStopped in for breakfast during the week and as expected, there was no crowd at 9:30am on a Thursday. The cafe is small just as the name implies. It's a self-serve type of service. You order at the window and in diner style, food is prepared. The menu appears on a chalkboard above the order window and you also bus your own table when done. Quaint atmosphere and the food itself is usually good but for any local, you will find that the cost of breakfast is pricey. Today, there were a few people sitting around drinking coffee and surfing the web on their laptops. I ordered the French Toast for the first time. It consisted of two slices of on one-inch-thick white bread served with a very small side (about 2 teaspoons) of butter and 4 tablespoons of syrup. This and two slices of bacon cost over $12.00. When I asked for more syrup, I was told that it would cost another 50 cents each. So I paid the $1.00 for the additional side (about 8 tablespoons of syrup). Seems pretty petty to charge extra for what most restaurants leave on the table. Though the food is always good, it's not over the top by any means and it's pretty much a self serve restaurant. You really don't get the country atmosphere here and can see why most locals still prefer to go to Virlies on Main street. It's always busy at Virlies and they don't nickle and dime their customers and you can eat a country breakfast at almost half the cost of going to the Small Cafe. Though the food is good at the Cafe, Customer service still goes a long way in developing customer loyalty and I don't get the impression that the folks at the Small Cafe really care about that.. Probably...
