This is a long review, so my summary is: If you "always see this place but never stopped in" on your commute, don't wait any longer to check out Frank&Shirley's. You will not regret it!
With so many great food stops around the stretch of 51 heading into Brentwood and beyond, it can be hard to decide where you wanna spend your money at when you're hungry. Living in Brentwood but commuting to Robinson for work on the daily, I always noticed Frank & Shirley's Restaurant. Just on the outside and in passing, this place screams comfy roadside diner vibes. Finally I stopped to grab a bite, and I wish I hadn't waited so long to try the food at Frank & Shirley's.
Being alive for 29 years, I've eaten a lot of breakfast, and cooked mainly breakfast faire at a chain diner for about 5 years in the past. You could call me a breakfast connisseur at this point. What I'm trying to say, is I know a good breakfast when I've eaten it. As important as service and atmosphere is to a restaurant, the shining star is the food, and Frank & Shirley's does not disappoint in that regard. I was drinking coffee, water, and I ordered what my wonderful waitress dubbed the "Trucker" breakfast with a side of homefries. This came with 2 eggs, toast, side of meat, and pancakes, plus the side of homies. This is a lot of food(and it only cost me 14.98 with tax!!) so if you wanna order this come with an appetite. Everything was cooked to perfection, the cook here 100% knows timing and what everything should look and "feel" like when its done. Over medium eggs' yolks were just runny enough while the whites were fully cooked, rye bread was nicely toasted with the right portion of butter, the sausage links were juicy and flavorful(but next time I'm getting the patties!). But! My favorite parts of this meal had to be the hotcakes and homefries. My goodness. Definitely prepared homemade... Thick cut potatoes, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and they actually tasted like potatoes and not just butter and seasoning. Easily the best homies I've had at a joint in a very long time. As for the pancakes, pleasantly fluffy without being too dense, not too thick, really "just right" where the texture needed to be. Damn good flavor, not too sweet, and buttery. They even put a butter packet top down on the hotcakes so when you open it up the butter is melty. And since I can't not mention it, they actually serve good coffee here. No offense to diner coffee but its pretty hit or miss in my experience. No idea what brand they brew but whatever it is, its good. Lastly, the food came out about 10 mins from when I ordered - which is excellent in my books.
With the food being mentioned, I can't end this review without talking up the fantastic wait staff at Frank & Shirley's. I wish I had gotten the two waitresses names but I didn't. It didn't take me long to recognize that people come to this place not just for the phenomenal food, but also for the fantastic service and personalities the waitresses serve up. I'm more on the quiet side so I don't often offer up much for conversation when I'm eating solo, but with all of the banter I could hear echoing throughout the restaurant, the two ladies holding down the ship clearly know how to liven up a business. Not only that, but they were both extremely attentive. Granted it wasn't super busy when I was there, something tells me that wouldn't have made a difference. Even the one lady who was not my waitress would stop and check in and see if I needed a coffee topper.
All in all, I could not be more pleased with my experience at Frank & Shirley's Restaurant and I hope to visit this spot again soon, and hope others will do the same. Excellent service, excellent food, fair prices, what's not to love? Thanks...
Read moreI pass this little spot a ton on 51. As a result, I have had a lot of opportunities to stop here, but never have. I'm either never going the right way, not looking to sit down and eat, or a number of factors. Today though, when I walked out of the gym, I knew I was going to stop and eat before work, and I figured I'd give it a try.
I was happy that I did!
It's a cozy little space. Things were clean, people happy, and everything well settled in. I was served up my drink pretty quick, along with a menu. It's a very straight forward fare. Breakfast has your expected items, with some variety, but nothing that transcends the continental breakfast and its various additions in the form of pancakes, french toast, and waffles.
They are open all day, but seeing as how I stopped in for breakfast, I figured I'd try the lot of French Toast, Pancakes, and half of a waffle. It was a lot of food! I ended up bringing a pancake home, and leaving mighty stuffed. Everything was good. My preference ended up being towards the pancakes and french toast. The pancakes are big, and fluffy. The French Toasts are crisp on the outside and bready inside. The waffles are good, but a little underwhelming.
All of this came out to about $20. They definitely keep prices down. They have some options that look like you might be able to swing breakfast for under $5.
So, for the food, if it's up your alley, and its on your route, I'd say go for it.
My only two points and potential negatives are this: Parking and pulling in are rough. 51 is busy, so you gotta' approach it from the right side, or it's gonna' be a wait, with some potentially mad people waiting on you. On this note, avoid parking near 51 if it's raining. Walked out to my car and got thoroughly splashed by a car speeding by. Not the owner's fault, it's 51. 2: This place is very laid back, and th eservice is excellent. Having said that, the pace matches. I could have probably been out in half the time if service was a bit faster, but that wasn't a concern for me. It could easily be a concern for others. So, I'd say, avoid stopping in if you're trying to get out in under an hour....
Read moreI've driven by this place many times since I live not too far from it but never went in. I decided to finally try them. I called an order in on my way to watch my grandbaby. When I went in to pick up my meal I was greeted by very friendly staff. They had my order hot and ready. When I left, I mistakenly left my cell phone behind, not realizing it until I was part way to my daughter's house. I turned around and went back. The staff hadn't seen it but took time out to help me look for it. I believe it was the owner who finally found it in amongst their menus where I had been standing for my order. I so appreciated their diligence in helping me. I had all my work phone numbers on that phone and needed it desperately. When I got to my daughter's house and ate my food, it was delicious. I had been trying to find a place who made awesome home fries and found these to be very good. I will definitely be stopping here again on my way to my daughter's home. Try them out. You won't be...
