It's a landmark. Very famous and well known. Their ice cream is good (not amazing or anything - it's soft serve). It's pretty cool they have cheeseburgers for the old-time ice cream store style. The burgers seem like they're food service frozen patties. So, again, nothing amazing there.
If it's seems like I don't like Page Dairy Mart, that's not true. But I think some stuff should be looked at objectively.
Where they really do something special is with their sundaes. The Wafflonia waffle sundae with fresh berries is incredible. The Yinzer with a huge baked Blondie might even be better. I can't begin to tell you how delicious they are.
Page's is at it's best when it's an ice cream dessert... When it's ice cream with other things and not just a plain old cone. Their cone could come from any Tastee Freeze, Dairy Delite or other roadside soft serve place you could come up with. Get something MORE if you're going to go.
Starting off being a bit of a bummer and then circling back....I'd probably give it 4 stars but for two major problems: Cash Only and The Lines.
I get that a business might not want to deal with the fees associated with taking debit cards. It's a decision they need to make, but let's not pretend like in 2021 it's not inconvenient to the customer. I don't normally mention cash only being a big problem but... The line can be so crazy at Page's. Just wrapping around the building. Making change takes time. Maybe only a minute per transaction, but when there's 30 people in line that time adds up.
If you forgot cash, there's an ATM. And the ATM? Probably has a line for it! Hey! Extra waiting! I've waited in line for Page's ATM longer than I've waited in line for ice cream at a Dairy Queen.
People parking wherever, sprawling around the building. The worst drivers and parkers in Pittsburgh all congregate at Page's. It's like being in a demolition derby with none of the fun.
All told, being brutally honest, the ice cream (itself) is ok. Nothing special. I think it's better at Bruster's. If you want a cone, go there.
If you really want soft serve, go to your local ice cream shop... Or maybe a Rita's.
If you want an absolutely magical sundae, shake, etc (and you have cash on you... And there's no line) you can't do better than Page's. All that negativity and I'll still go. I just don't bother when the parking...
Read moreI wanted to write this review after stopping here many times over the past year to try out their vast menu, so now I can leave a genuine review.
In short, this place has high reviews for a reason. The variety, quality, and the people who work here are top-notch.
I have tried all the sundaes. Not all were winners, but that was more due to my personal preferences rather than the actual sundaes.
The staff here is fantastic, always friendly and never sour, even when it's hot outside and the line is wrapping around the building.
Let's talk about the line. There's no way around it. If you're looking for fast and good, you can only choose one, and the only option is good. I've been here many times, and honestly, there's no good pattern to predict when the line will be huge or smaller. Of course, there are big lines when the weather is nice and it's the weekend. In fact, today the line was around the building and into the parking lot. People who are wise bring little camping chairs, which is what my wife and I did. It took the better part of an hour to get in. One nice thing that makes the wait more bearable is a bridge that goes over much of the parking lot, shielding you from the sun most of the time and any weather.
Parking, even on the most packed days, is still possible as they have an overflow lot. However, there have been a few times where there wasn't a single spot to be had, but that only happened once to me.
My advice if you don't want to wait in a long line is to go on a rainy, miserable day during the weekdays shortly after it opens or an hour or two before it closes. Then the wait isn't too bad.
You should at least come here once as these old school places are becoming less and less common over the years and part of what makes this place so great is the experience it offers and its history. There are other local ice cream places that have ice cream just as good but there is no other place like this in terms of the nostalgia and quality of the...
Read morehow often can you say you've ate ice cream under a bridge?
many locals raved about page's being the "best ice cream in pittsburgh" and yelp has many glowing reviews. here's my TLDR; come here for very affordable huge ice cream sundaes and arctic swirls (think mcflurry's with mix-ins), but expect very very sweet ice cream and pretty basic flavors.
we came on a random afternoon and there was a line. there's parking up front and menus on the side of the building. there's not much seating so we saw most eating in the car.
prices are cheap - $4.81 for a small arctic swirl (which is huge and i was sugared out 1/4 of the way through). it wasn't clear what an arctic swirl was to me but basically you can pick any soft serve flavor base and up to 3 mix ins.
the menu is kind of overwhelming. the sundaes looked good and i wish i got that.
// maple arctic swirl with waffle pieces and chocolate chunks $4.81 // as mentioned, huge portion and very cheap. also very very sweet. their flavors definitely taste cream or vanilla based- the maple flavor was pretty light. chocolate was thin hard pieces which was good. couldn't really taste the waffle as it was very small bits.
my mom got a coffee arctic swirl but we could not really taste the coffee flavor. if we weren't getting different flavors, you could definitely share one between at least 2 people!
i personally would not revisit but you should if you have a really big sweet tooth and a...
