Ran into the Grinch this Christmas Day. Normally I try to read negative reviews instead of just looking at stars, but I skipped it here and regretted it.
I had made a phone reservation for Christmas dinner for my family, and was assured by the lady I spoke with that kids would NOT have to order a full Christmas dinner (my kids eat like birds), and that they would be happy to let us order some alternate food for the kids. Well, reality turned out to be a bit different.
But first: poor service. After being seated for nearly 20 minutes without anyone bothering to check on us or bring us water, I had to get up and ask for it. I spoke to two of the waitresses, and we got a waiter and some water after that, but when it came time to order he was emphatic that kids MUST order a Christmas dinner, which had exactly one choice of entrée: steak. I explained to him that I had discussed this when I booked the reservation, so he went to discuss with manager, came back, and told us his answer was "no".
So we asked to speak to the manager (who turned out to be the owner). And I was floored: right from the start he was surly and rude with my wife, explaining that we had to order the full steak dinner for each kid, even after being told what his employee had promised. When my wife pointed out that my youngest will not eat steak, he gave us an "alternative": we could order the full-cost meal of chicken and split it between the kids, and said "It's very simple" in a rude voice. When my wife explained that my oldest did not like chicken, he stepped back, got a look of disgust on his face, and sighed loudly. Tiring of this garbage, I stepped in and explained to him, again, what the lady I booked the reservation had promised, and that from my perspective he was basically refusing to honor the commitment the lady I spoke with, his employee, made when we made the reservation.
At this point, it got almost comical, in a sad kind of way: he became very argumentative and said "What employee? My brother and I are the owners and the only ones who ever answer the phone". I explained that I had spoken with a woman, whereupon he insisted in a loud voice that "We don't have any woman working here". Having just spoken with two waitresses who were definitely working there a few moments earlier to get us service after the previously mentioned 20 minute wait, I was rather incredulous, looked at him like the idiot he plainly was, and asked "You don't have any women working here?". He replied "No!" implying that I was basically a liar, at which point I said "Screw this, we're out of here", threw my napkin down, and we left, never to return. We enjoyed a lovely meal at Café Istanbul instead, where we were given prompt, courteous service.
Other reviewers' comparison of this guy with Seinfeld's The Soup Nazi character were most apt, the exception being food quality: based upon many of the reviews, he actually did us a favor by sparing us the injury-on-top-of-insult of their mediocre food/ultra long wait for food combination (entirely believable in light of our inexcusable wait for drinks); at least The Soup Nazi had good soup!
In looking through other reviews, I see that basically the same bait-and-switch had happened to another reviewer at Thanksgiving dinner: they were promised that they could bring food for their kids, and were treated to the same "you MUST order a dinner for your kids" routine. Others report being accused of being liars as I was, hostility and rude behaviors as a result of complaints/concerns, etc...for the money, there are FAR too many excellent steakhouses in the area which actually provide good service and treat customers with dignity and respect when issues are raised to be treated rudely and waste time and money in this place.
Bob's, Del Frisco's, Silver Fox, Capital Grille, Perry's, and Steve Fields are all within ten minutes of Mignon and put it to shame, along with III Forks and Ruth's Chris in North Dallas, there plenty of better alternatives out there, steer clear...
Read moreMy husband and I just celebrated our wedding anniversary this evening at Mignon. This was our first time here. I am French and a French cuisine home cook so I was excited to taste the food! We started off with some cocktails (we had 4 between us) which were delicious! We moved right on with the foie gras. As a French person, I’ve never had it warm and seared so it was a very pleasant treat. Luckily my cocktail was slightly sweet which paired well with the butteriness and umami of the foie gras. My husband and I each ordered the beef wagyu filet mignon. I paired mine with a peppercorn brandy cream sauce and truffle oil pomme frites with a glass of French Bordeaux. My husband also had a wagyu beef filet and paired his with a lobster tail, grilled asparagus and oyster mushroom medley. I ended with a cappuccino and he opted for the crème brûle. We both really enjoyed the food. It was definitely one of the best steaks I’ve had. My only two criticisms are that one, the bread isn’t a true baguette. It’s made to look like a small baguette about the size and shape of a hoagie roll. But it didn’t taste like a baguette. The bread was not bad by any stretch. It just wasn’t a baguette. The inside was very dense as opposed to the more airiness and fluffiness in a baguette. My second criticism is that they had the bass turned up super high in the jazz music they had on. It also didn’t help that we were sitting under a speaker and that bass was just vibrating that speaker. It was distracting when we first sat down but then we just adapted to it. All in all I’m giving Mignon a 8/10. We will definitely be back! Oh and bring a credit card with a high limit! 😂 All joking aside, it is pricey. We figured with the wagyu and the drinks alone would be at least $400-$500. It was not. It was $915 before tip. Now, we are foodies and we always go somewhere really good on our anniversary. I’m dying to know how much those steaks were! They weren’t even on the menu. But my husband didn’t grab the itemized receipt. So bottom line, if you have a special occasion coming up and you don’t mind paying for quality then this is the spot. We will definitely be back! Oh and Carlos our waiter,...
Read moreWalking into the restaurant it immediately felt intimate and upscale. The staff was very welcoming. I visited during Mignon’s Happy Hour and I was seated near the bar area at a stunning high top table where I ordered the Fried Oysters and also, decided on the Dark & Stormy which was my cocktail of choice that evening. The happy hour menu had a lot to offer and most of the small plates offered were quite generous portions.
The food arrived fast, the staff was attentive and entertaining, and the service was great. The atmosphere was quite charming and the music was a bit old-timey but very unique and authentic to the French style steakhouse they pride themselves to be.
The Fried Oysters were served on a bed of sautéed spinach and smothered in creamy hollandaise with pancetta as the garnish. The fried oysters were quite amazing! However, would have liked to have seen the them shine alittle more in this dish as the hero as the hollandaise felt a bit overwhelming. I wanted to taste more of the crispy crunch of the fried oysters and found myself searching for it a bit. Also, would recommend a touch more seasoning to the spinach as well. But, all in all a very successfully constructed dish that I would definitely want to stay on the menu and would love to come revisit in the future.
As for the cocktail, the Dark & Stormy more than exceeded my exceptions with a symphony of spice every sip which was exceptional! Also, appreciated how refreshing the ginger beer felt on the palate nestled together with a smoky rum making this classic cocktail feel like a well balanced drink with a smooth finish making it the perfect end to the day.
You’ll definitely want to visit during happy hour as prices were most reasonable then and for the quality of food and drinks offered its unbeatable! This place is truly a gem and perfect for date night or an eventful gathering. Mignon thanks so much for a delightful evening I thoroughly enjoyed dining with you and hope to do...
