Been going to this place for years, but it's been slipping lately. This morning, went in and ordered 4 croissants. Wasn't even busy at the time. Walked out with one of their small bags that was pretty full. Got home and discovered they only gave me 3 croissants (but charged me for 4). Called them up and they offered to refund one of them. Told them I'd prefer the 4th croissant. So, they said they'd set one aside for me. I go back in there to pick it up (which was obviously inconvenient and annoying to begin with) and they acted like I was interrupting them (even though it was their mistake in the first place). In trying to help them out in the future, I pointed out that 3 croissants barely fit in the bag they gave me and, if someone orders 4 croissants, they should put them in a box. Read moreThe almond croissant here is THE almond croissant. A work of art that redefines what a croissant can be. Also, the figgy buckwheat scone is spectacular, so totally original, sweetness and texture and flavor held in mild tension and deep harmony.
UPDATE: The salted pecan wonderbun is spectacular, and was my favorite until I tasted the wonderbun... maybe the best dessert I've ever had. It's like the pecans put the pastry into a category with pecan pie (a great category). The wonderbun itself has a simplicity that elevates it to an elemental, philosophical level, a meditation on the nature of sugar and butter and cinnamon and texture. It's like with each bite there's a necessary pause to acknowledge the slight sense of awe being discovered in between the expected moments of delicious satisfaction. Thank...
Read moreBakeshop is the kind of shop you are likely to find around Manhattan and San Francisco, the best in their category. Every product they sell tastes like they have tried and perfected them before putting them up for sale. Bakes are original while still familiar. If a description promises maple then you will taste maple. Kim Boyce should be very proud for what she created. With so many pasty shops in Portland it's hard to be original and the best, but they have certainly achieved that.
Some of my all time favorites are maple scone, seasonal hand pies, almond croissant, wonder bun, Parisian fruit puff. And I look forward to try many more. Service is always friendly and helpful. Thank...
