Overall, this place isn't bad. Some of their dishes are done very well. Others, not so much. Maybe it's due to differences in regional methods of preparing cuisines from region to region but here in the US we generally expect at least marginally similar recipes for any common dish.
Specifically I'm talking about their egg foo yung. Typically, and I make it myself and usually order it at any Asian restaurant I go to, which is many, this dish consists of eggs, bean sprouts and vegetables, in a pancake or fritter style presentation with a soy gravy smothered on top of it.
I don't know what they served me, but it certainly wasn't like anything I can explain, except maybe vegetable "cubes" that were overcooked and were sitting in something like vegetable stock. Horrible.
Not all of their dishes are like that though. I've had Singapore noodles, broccoli beef, kung pao chicken, egg drop soup and several other dishes here that were fairly decent given the price and the fact that this is more of a chinese take out than it is a "take your family out for sit down chinese" type place.
It's definitely not as good as it used to be when it was Kwan's kitchen, but I still eat here occasionally and I don't regret it. Other than the egg foo yung, which I won't order...
Read moreWhen I entered, I immediately mentioned to the young man at the cashier's station I am vegetarian; only to learn, there are no vegetarian/vegan options to the pork egg rolls or all-meat-based soups. The owner/manager? even tried to brain-wash me by saying that vegetarians eat meat-based broths--vegans won't-crazy, crazy, crazy! Well, if that is so, that so-called vegetarian is not vegetarian. I asked that he use water, soy sauce.... He would not! Every Chinese restaurant that advertises vegan friendly are, in fact, vegan/vegetarian friendly. These owners keep vegetabe broth that comes in cubes or concentrated jars. Better yet, they make their own broths by using the peels, ends etc of cut up vegetables. After simmering and cooling, the broth is then frozen for such times as a vegetarian request. Since I have been a vegetarian for well over 50 years, I could not nor will not be brain-washed (dumbed-down) by his limited understanding. I walked out and went to a Cinese restaurant in Pueblo that knows the meaning and will prepare accordingly for vegetarians/vegans. Bless Kan (Khan) Kitchen on Prairie...
Read moreWhat a pleasant surprise this place was. We were skeptical by the location and the broken parking spaces(considering that it has a drive through .. strange for a Chinese restaurant). Anyway we wanted to customize the order as we long spicy food. The gentleman who took our order paid attention to our specific requests (includes and excludes). The chef made the order exactly to our spec if not better. Oh boy, when it comes to quantity, we gave 3 orders and the quantity was enough to feed 5 people contently. The staff were very friendly and they even went ahead and suggested a few restaurants of our native cuisine to check out the next time we were in Pueblo area, but what they don't realize is how wrong they were as we will NOT be visiting any other place but Ken's Kitchen only. Hands down the best Chinese restaurant I have had so far that met all my expectations with flavor and spice level. 6 stars for quality...
