Federal Donuts has finally brought a taste of Philly’s beloved cake-style donuts and fried chicken to the ‘burbs. Had family visiting from out of town, and we couldn’t resist the temptation to check out this local institution’s shiny new location. We picked up a mix of donuts and sandwiches and headed home eager to see if the hype would live up to our expectations. Let’s start with the real show-stoppers: the donuts. We sampled a dozen, covering the spectrum from Hot & Fresh to Classic to Fancy, and they did not disappoint. The Double Layer Pumpkin Pie donut stole the show, earning the title of family favorite. The moist pumpkin cake, the cream cheese glaze, and accented by graham cracker crumb, it was the perfect balance of fall flavors with just the right touch of sweetness. I don’t usually enjoy foods with floral notes, but the Strawberry Lavender from the Hot & Fresh lineup gets an honorable mention with its delicate floral twist, while the Old Fashioned Glaze proved that you can never go wrong with a classic. Now, onto the sandwiches. We tried the Early Bird breakfast sandwich and both the South Philly and Fried Chicken Sandwiches. While the sandwiches brought some creative toppings to the table—especially the South Philly with its giardiniera and long hot mayo—the portions were smaller than expected, especially for the price. The fried chicken, unfortunately, missed the mark being a overcooked and dry. Let’s just say, these birds flew a little too close to the fryer. Bottom line? If you’re here for the donuts, you’re in for a treat. But when it comes to the sandwiches, I’d say stick to the sweet stuff. Federal Donuts is a win for donut lovers, bringing a mix of flavors that truly lives up to its Philly reputation. So, grab a dozen donuts, skip the sandwiches, and indulge in the sugar rush you came for.

Declining. Not too long ago for the same amount of money (around $12) I’d get two whole pieces of chicken well seasoned, a honey doughnut and pickles. Now it’s three tenders considerably smaller than my last visit a month ago, and barely seasoned. I get that they’re riding the chicken sandwich wave but it’s looking bad. Hopefully they can regroup.

This location is across from Radnor High School. There’s plenty of parking. This was our first time although they did open in September. Phil was very helpful explaining the menu, items, and his favorites. We got 2 original fried chicken sandwiches as well as the sliders which was one each of the original, buffalo, and South Philly. We also got an order of plain fries. We couldn’t not get donuts, too!! We tried the lemon ricotta, chocolate churro, vanilla with sprinkles, and glazed. They have Coke products and Heinz ketchup. Everything was delicious so we are looking forward to having Federal Donuts &...

Made to order donuts are the best option. They are warm, tender and smell incredible. These are more like a sugar coating. The Fancies, which are in the case, have more of a glaze coating. Their chicken sandwiches are okay, not really what I expected. The chicken is breaded almost like a beer batter consistency, but I prefer more of a crunch. Staff were friendly and helpful. They also sell merch. Location is in a strip mall. Parking isn’t bad but like all strip malls, busy times of day can make it challenging to...
