My bride and I recieved a gift card to come try out Flemming's back at Christmas time, and courtesy of Life love and other viruses we were just able to visit Fleming's Prime Steakhouse for the 1st time last night.
Our reservation time was early. We were warmly and promptly greeted by the staff and Manager. The hostess told us as she walked us to our seat that our Waiter would be Oscar. Mr. Oscar warmly greeted us & welcomed us to the restaurant as if he was welcoming us into his home. The genuine interest and care for us as new friends was experienced immediately and continued throughout the night.
He allowed us time to peruse the supposed limited menu (ya know because of the Covid-19 mess), but I tell ya, I did not find the menu to feel limited or lack an option I would have desired. So I cant wait to go back when they are in full swing to see the difference. Typically a limited menu leaves you wanting for something, not for me, not the case.
We started with a couple of cocktails as we relaxed in Mr. Oscar's dining room. We talked about our day. We were able to reconnect without anyone breathing down our neck to move it along, move it along...so what a super nice change from so many places nowadays allowing a party of two 75 or 90 minutes to dine...in Oscar's house he treated us like a prince and princess, which I gotta tell you...yep that was a nice feeling. We started our meal with the burrata and prosciutto appetizer. The menu describes the components of it accurately, but the presentation and execution of the dish, makes what the menu described as a sort of a salad (in my mind) was a gourmet starter that I would rather have wrestled away from my wife and ordered her her own, because the flavor profiles that they built and the detail that was expressed in that simple appetizer, they were out of this world.
We then placed our dinner order. Which was a conversation because as I am unfamiliar with their meals, unfamiliar with their wine list, so when in foreign lands you simply have to ask questions. I explaned to Mr. Oscar that my Bride would be having a filet this evening, and I was looking for the decadent steak only found at a Steakhouse. (Key point...I always have little hesitation when i ask a waiter what I should get, especially when I have not dined with them, because inherently the "must have item" comes with the steepest pricetag) I told Mr. Oscar that I was between the Prime Dry aged boneless ribeye and the bone in Prime ribeye. He assured me that both were excellent choices, his preference between the two steaks was the bone in. A little more meat, the flavor and moisture from the bone imparted into the steak, hard to beat. And for 4 or 5 dollars less, I go with the bone in option. What a tremendous choice.
Seeing as how well Mr. Oscar's tastes and mine have meshed so far, I ask him for his preference on a full bodied red. I let him know I was comfortable with a Cab, Merlot or a blend. Again kind of expecting to be told about some exceptional bottle with a similarly exceptional pricetag, here comes my Host for the evening Mr. Oscar with an affordable and absolutely perfect wine to pair with the evenings meals. And if you can believe it...he also buys the wine at the local Liquor store; so not only affordable, but also available for purchase to enjoy at home without the required restaurant mark up.
Dinners came. We enjoyed the Flemming's potatoes, and my wife's all time favorite go to dish creamed spinach. It does nothing for me, but she says it was AMAZING! The spuds were a solid choice. The steaks very different in thickness and style were perfectly cooked, as you would expect, but as i have struggled to find, even at the finest of spots.Evening wound down with a decadent dessert and Cappuccino. Despite the fact that our new friend Mr. Oscar opted to not direct us to highest priced options to maximize the bottom line for the organization, because we will come back many times, which will maximize the bottom line 10 fold! Thank you we'll be back to dine at Oscar's Flemming's...
Read moreI have to be honest it simply wasn’t very good. We had a booth in the back of the restaurant. As soon as I sat down I felt something wet dripping on my shoulder. I looked up and condensation was falling off of the air conditioning vent directly on my head. It was no big deal but the vent looked dirty.
As we were waiting for our drinks to be delivered, I looked at my wine glass and saw a piece of something crusted onto the inside of the glass. As a former server, I was appalled but also understanding that things happen. I cleaned the glass with my napkin and didn’t say anything to our server.
After the bread was brought to the table I glanced down at the napkin surrounding the bread and a small fly was crawling through it. We took the bread out of the basket and attempted to brush the fly out of the napkin. Afterwards, at least two additional flying insects (flies) blew across or around our table with us consistently shooing them away.
The sweetener that was brought to the table had dried butter on the rim of the container holding the sweetener. We should have said something about all of this but honestly I never want to be perceived as difficult as a former waiter and bartender.
In terms of our food, I would say overall - it was fine. I’ve definitely had better and at a much lower cost. The corn brûlée is flat out disgusting. It’s extremely sweet and lumpy with a crème brûlée fired top of brown sugar that was mostly wet melted sugar. The manager stopped by our table and asked us what we thought. Both of us are very polite and we said “it’s definitely different.” My partner said “it’s interesting.” The manager said it’s incredibly addictive and gets a lot of reaction. After he left our table, my partner said “I bet it gets a lot of reaction.” When our server came out to the table, we told him that we simply didn’t care for the corn and he graciously took it off the menu - which we did not expect. The rest of the food was fine. It wasn’t bad by any stretch but it certainly wasn’t memorable.
Overall our server was wonderful and we are glad we tried the restaurant. However the food and cleanliness issues were not up to the standards they should be. We will...
Read moreMy wife and I were here at Fleming's this Friday evening (4/10/15). Neither of us eat steak and so the choice of Fleming's appears a bit surprising. It can however be explained by the fact that we had a $40 gift card from AmEx and were therefore willing to give this place a shot.
I made a reservation through OpenTable for 9 p.m. and once in, I was seated promptly. The matron left a tablet at the table so that I could look through the wine list and order wines but I gave that a pass. Between my wife and I we decided to go with an appetizer - sweet chile calamari, a small plate - Gulf Shrimp and Sea Scallops and a large plate - the Chilean sea bass. Of these three dishes, I enjoyed the sweet chile calamari the most, with the Chilean sea bass a second. I definitely did not enjoy the Gulf Shrimp and Sea Scallops which lacked any flavor and seasoning. I had to season it with more than a pinch of salt, even though it turns out that I am generally a low-salt person. Also, I found the portion sizes quite small. There were only two medium-sized scallops and two shrimps in the small plate and while the entree included a reasonably-sized portion of the sea bass, it came without any carbs.Neither the small plate nor the entree came with any sides which is unusual.
We also tried out a dessert and went with their chocolate lava cake. That was by far the best dish of the evening and something my wife and I truly enjoyed. It was rich and decadent without being overly sweet. The molten center of Belgian chocolate was delicious and as we finished up the dessert, we remarked that this was the kind of dish which alone might justify a trip to the restaurant.
That said, when I think about my overall meal, I would say that the lack of flavor in the small plate combined with the small portion sizes all across the board left me quite unsatisfied. I also found our server, Angela(?) to be attentive but quite unfriendly and cold. Overall I am unlikely to return to Fleming's...
