We really enjoy the House of Hops with their friendly and helpful staff. Great local bottle shop with a vast selection (both cold and room temp) at reasonable prices, plus a bar area with several rotating beers on tap. It's nice to be able to pick a single bottle out of the fridge and enjoy it on site at cost with a one dollar cold bottle fee. Makes trying out different beers pretty economical. I don't think this place ever intended to be a full-scale bar per se, but locals do like hanging out here, so one improvement could be further seating, perhaps a bunch of smaller tables with chairs or Oktoberfest style seating at a long picnic table(s). It's not much fun to show up for a beer and stand around because there is no where to sit, and there's usually no where to sit with just a couple of tables and bar stools available. I think they would make more money and encourage more loitering/buying if they worked just a little on patron comfort. That said, we like the dog-friendly nature of the place, available board games and ping-pong, and the food truck partnerships they have for some food options on select nights. Very unique business. I'm sure they will continue to be...
Read moreImpressive selection of beers. Almost too many. The bartender was very helpful and knowledgeable. I was very turned off by the arrogant owner/manager. I used a colorful term to describe a local sports personality in a pleasant conversation with a patron next to me and the owner/manager, who was at his computer in a corner the whole time I was there, flipped out. I have no problem with a no profanity policy or being asked to not curse, but his reaction was overboard in my opinion. I really was taken aback. Maybe he was having a bad day, but... Good thing that there a many other similar places and great brewery's in the area with more reasonable pricing and appreciative management. Bad experience coming from someone "in charge". I don't think I need to return anytime soon.
UPDATE - I appreciate Keith addressing my concern so quickly, and I hope he took it constructively. It says a lot about him as a business owner. I was wrong for cursing and really have no problem with the request and policy. I have a wife and kids and have been offended by the same thing in public places. I guess both our perceptions of what happened may be...
Read moreI miss living off Glenwood! This is my favorite bottle shop in Raleigh. Not only do they have a great selection of brews and special releases, but they have a killer selection on tap. Not to mention it is dog friendly, there are food trucks, and they have ping pong! Add to it that they have made huge improvements to their patio space and this is just a killer spot to hang out on any given night. It's also a popular place I use to meet up with friends I have not seen in a while, and a killer date place - especially first dates because if it doesn't go well at least you can have a sweet microbrew to soothe your wounds :). If ever I am in the area I make a point to stop by, and if I still lived over there I'd be...
