Few months back was looking for a new spot to get a decently priced steak n cheese, and for subs in general. I've always heard good things about New Deal but haven't been there since I was a kid! First time I went, got a couple steak n cheese, meatball sub, chicken parm! And they were amazing! Fully packed the steak n cheese reminded me of Sonny Noto's when they were in East Boston(juices soaked into the bread, tender, packed with flavor)! 2nd time I ordered from there I got the steak n pastrami, although the pastrami over took in flavor, again AMAZING! And the meatball/ eggplant, SO GOOD! And the Manhattan Special Drinks are a bonus, I'm a sucker for a good sarsaparilla root beer!
But the last 2 times(about a month apart) I went the steak n cheese was disappointing, it wasn't packed, to be honest it was more bread then steak. Maybe when adding other items fills out the bread. But for someone who doesn't add toppings(veggies), like my brother and sometimes me, deffinately underwhelming. The favor was still amazing, but for the size sandwich and the price(which is reasonable), not to have a the bread filled... It's tough to find a good size, good quality steak n cheese or any sub in the area these days. And New Deal are one of the few doing things right. Most looking for affordable decent eats go to Market Basket for a 6 dollar sub same size as New Deal and S&L, and Carmella's in East Boston(they don't do steak but their meatball is one of the best) . But when I want better quality and want that Sonny Noto memory, without going to Wakefield, New Deal is my choice, but with under filled subs(as far as the steak n cheese) , two separate times, is why I gave a 4 stars and why I'd 2nd guess getting the steak. I'd still go back though.... and possibly...
Read moreI've been coming to New Deal for over 20 years, so it breaks my heart to give them a review that is less than five stars.
The subs are very good, but the service isn't that great anymore. Even with four people behind the counter, expect a long wait to have your sandwich made. I don't blame the poor kids working behind the counter because they are overworked.
I came in on a weekend and ordered a few subs, the kid screwed them up. No problem. Then I came in a few weeks later and ordered a few more subs, they were also not what I wanted. I even gave the kid a piece of paper with my order written down on it this time, and they still managed to mess up my order. Okay.
I came in a few weeks later and told one of the owners and he said, "what do you want me to do about it? The kids have been working all day. I would close earlier if I could". That's not the response I was expecting to hear from someone running a business. I'm not going to name names, but maybe you should either hire more staff or schedule shorter shifts. I've worked in the culinary field before, so I completely understand how difficult it is to work in such a fast paced environment for several hours at a time. The cherry on top was that they ran out of bread that day, so I left there empty handed and hungry.
No problem, if that's how you want to run your business then I just won't go there anymore, and I'll be sure to tell all of my friends and aquantences about my negative experience as well.
At least you have those quirky videos on Tik-Tok to generate...
Read moreJust left ND... Last time being overcharged for sale items along with 2 Steak Bombs not made properly or even similar to eachother. We travel back to Beverly to find one Bimb is missing the cheese, one 2" shred of salami, hardly any presence of Vinegar peppers either. The other sub had appropriate balance of VP, and Salami/pepperoni? Lacking the melted cheese presented a pretty dry sub. $21.99 each...checked WS menu said, $18.99 I'd pay $24.99 if made correctly, somewhat filled end-to-end with the ingredients. Definitely not the heavyweight subs ND once produced.
The 4 impulse pastries (@ counter) were 2 for $1.00 Charged .99 each! No receipt in the bag? Paid cash $63.89 Sign states: Discount, cash paid or a 3.? % rate added to all credit card payments. What a "bait-n-switch" game that is. Credit card fees are the COGS/(Cost of doing business) yet this has been the norm at ND for a number of years..? Since I first noticed this during Covid.
Misleading!! If the delivery guy marks ur sub or products $21.99 × 2 subs. You add $2.99 chip bag, 2 Seltzer waters..$2.99 @ least, $4.29 for pkg of cookies, $3.97 for 4 pkgs of Greek pastry pkgs ($1.98 over charged.) Then what is actually the cash Discount??? You must wonder why any business would penalize a credit card payment from a customer. Plenty of places to spend $ on a meal with service and consistency. Awfully empty sub with nothing that made it a...
