Excellent place, food is very tasty, service is welcoming and friendly; a bit pricey.
Withdrawing previous review, & prior to today I hadn't been back to The Backstreet Restaurant in 9 months, now I remember why. Attitude with a smile runs customers like me away, & I will not be going back. Today I waited 1 hour to patronize this establishment, & was 1st in line to purchase a pastrami sandwich. Just as my purchase completed I noticed the lady standing next to me had a Ceasars salad that looked good. So, I asked if I could order that with dressing on the side. The elderly Caucasian lady behind the counter said, "were you in line?" Response, "yes, I was 1st in line & saw this salad after my purchase." Elder lady, "you might after wait a few minutes, you might have to wait a couple of minutes." Response, "okay, that's fine."(as a chef & caterer I'm thinking to myself it should only take 3 to 5 minutes to prepare salad) Then elder lady said, "you're going to have to go to the end if the line to make another purchase." Response, "No, then I won't be getting it nor will I be back again to this unhumanistic place if this is how you treat people like me" as I walked out the door. It's truly sad when businesses start to grow & forget about being humanistic, or get too big for their britches until they start loosing customers. Perhaps if this elde lady was to go somewhere & get treated like she treated me she'd get a clue. Unhumanistic treatment of customers runs customers away no matter how much you smile. Additionally, with 100+ contacts I withdrew my recommendation to patronize this establishment.

Response to establishment; Oh yes, she most certainly did tell me I would have to get back in line, at the end to make another purchase. The young man working the cash register can cover for her all he wants to. I know exactly what she said to me; it not something to make up about anyone, and I have to answer to a higher calling. No worries though because I will...
Read moreThis has to be the worst excuse for a sandwich I have ever eaten. The reason I even gave them one star was because the roast beef was at least 1" thick. But we paid $17 for one sandwich and 2 drinks, so it should have a good amount of meat on it. The thing is they pride themselves that they are all about the meat, not telling me that the bar where you add all your sandwich fixings had no tomatoes, onions or lettuce . You had to settle for sliced pickles and beets, carrot & celery sticks and some very plain pasta salad. Had I known the only thing there that would be good for my sandwich was sliced pickles I would have left. So finding nothing to put on this beef sandwich I asked if they had any Bar Ba Q sauce, and they said no! So I was stuck with white bread with a inch of roast beef with pickles on it. It had to be the most tasteless thing I have ever eaten. I was splitting it with my husband and was so sick of eating plain flavorless meat that I gave him rest of my half. Oh yes it came with a side and my husband picked the baked beans, and it came in one of those little white paper cups you might use for a side of salsa. There might have been 2 tablespoons of beans in it. Knowing this was our first visit we were asked what we thought , and I was honest and told him exactly what I thought ( though in a nice way). He said we don't have those extras for our sandwiches , because that's how everyone else does it , we like to be different here , it's all about the meat here.I told him " boring flavorless meat". To top it off when I got home I had such bad heart burn I thought I was having a heart attack. If you like a flavorless heart attack meat sandwich this is the...
Read moreThis place is sort of hidden, it's off of a quiet and not so well known street called Nelson. And the shop itself is somewhat tucked away and not easy to spot. But they have good food, nothing special, about their sandwiches, or at least I didnt get a "wow" factor from it. But their sandwiches aren't bad either. So be sure to do your best to find it, it's worth it in my opinion.
Their menu is small, which makes ordering easy. You order your sandwich by choosing the meat type, then bread type, then cheese type, then your side choice. They also have a condiments/mini salad bar with extra options that can be additional sides depending on how you look at it. The sandwiches are a bit over priced, but the condiments/mini salad bar makes up for it, just be sure to go back for seconds to get your money's worth.
The place is cozy, and I believe that's what sells this place. Being tucked away and hidden makes it somewhat private and or secluded, which is what many people like, from what I hear.
Their staff is nice and helpful. There are plenty of outdoor tables and chairs to sit at. Inside seating is limited.
I recommend going on a nice sunny day, to get a good feel for what this place has to offer. It's all about their atmosphere here, come enjoy a nice cozy place with lots of random wall decor and plants to look at while you enjoy good...
