It’s a nice park, on the smaller side… has a playground, tennis courts, ball field, and pool.
The playground has three sections one for little kids 2-5, another for 6+, and a sand box area. The 2-5 year old playground was great my 2 year-old loved it. The slides were not too steep or fast and she could climb up almost all the parts by herself. They had two swings for little ones too. There was also a large area of tables with a covering, perfect for birthday parties or events.
The tennis courts are in good shape. There are two courts here at Shamel Park and there are lights so you can play at night too. I think they are on a timer, but I’m not sure what the hours are.
The pool is a pretty good size with lanes and flags and all. We’ve had our kids in swim lessons here through the city which has been really good. It’s got a nice big area that is chest-high perfect for kids to play in. It’s also heated from solar, so it feels great. They have a little pool for tiny kids to enjoy too. Although, a recent post from the city said they don’t have recreational swimming at this park. They have bathrooms with changing area and showers to use before or after swimming.
The park is in good shape and has been taken care of. There are homeless here from time to time, but I’ve always felt safe. Definitely recommend the playground for...
Read moreSuch a beautiful park set next to a Catholic church near downtown Riverside, baseball fields and tennis courts located in the further reaches of it's quite substantial size, while play and eating areas border the east, and a pool for both public and private affairs sit west of the entrance. The only downside to such a great area is the bitter fact that it remains heavily populated with lesser fortunate individuals throughout the evening and into the mornings. Because of this, and homelessness in general as it seems, crime rates have reportedly increased within the surrounding areas and the city itself. It's few and far between feeling the least bit uneasy or intruded upon by anyone in particular when visiting Shamel, and don't let this become a warning to steer clear of the park entirely, because it still is one of my favorites within the city limits. Just keep in mind both time and place, and plan you visit alongside our only favorite western...
Read moreI use to come here multiple times a week to play tennis with my daughters and now we can no longer enjoy something we loved to do together. It’s beyond disappointing that the tennis courts are taken every single night by pickleball players. I wish there could be some type of schedule that would allow for the courts to be utilized by the tennis players in our community like we use too. I’m sure pickleball is fun although it just seems like a bunch of people trying to hit each other as hard as they can and can’t seem to hit it back to each other someone is always running to get the ball. We’re just bummed we don’t get to enjoy playing tennis together anymore in a safe place like we have for...
