Very good. It was busy for a Tuesday night around 6, and service was a bit slow, but understandable given how busy, and our server was friendly and attentive. Second visit, and will return as enjoy atmosphere and service.
Overall the food was good, but not great. Really the only reason not 5 stars. Everyone enjoyed their meal and desert, but the meal I got just wasn't that good.
We had the chips and salsa prior to meal, and chips were a bit stale and chewy or too much oil. One salsa was good and a nice low/medium heat and we all liked that one that we went to a second bowl of chips and salsa. The other salsa tasted like spaghetti sauce and was warm. Not good at all and would have not eaten any chips if not for the more traditionally salsa served.
I got the SPECIAL DINNER - Chalupa, chile relleno, taco, enchilada, tamale, rice & refried beans.
There was no chile relleno that I could find on the plate anywhere, and I asked the server where it was when brought out and she said under all the cheese. I even pulled stuff away to show her but no go. I only ate about half and brought rest home, and eating now as I write this have not found a chile relleno. It was the main reason I ordered the dish as one of my favorite Mexican dishes (except for an odd place that put raisins in one).
I dumped what I had over some chips at home and not bad for a lunch, but (referring to my original meal at the restaurant) I am not exaggerating that there was well over a half pound of ground beef on my plate, with a quarter pound each of rice and beans and then cheese. It was the definition of "hot mess" in food terms. There was zero in the way of any distinct flavor. My son was not a huge fan of his either as he got nachos and they were buried in meat as well to where I don't think you could tell what was what either. Will be back, but I think stick to simpler meal.
Prices were reasonable and family of 4 adults with drinks should run around $100. Wife and daughter got a drink each that were around $12/piece so your bill maybe lower. Big drinks like a Sangria in bowl on stem basically, but my beer was like a couple of dollars. Most dinner entrees were $11-15 with their steak items $15+.
Hoping for better meal experience for...
Read moreThis was one of my favorite restaurants until tonight. Some friends of mine went to El Cancun to celebrate a birthday. There were 4 women, all african american, except for one. who was caucasian. They came in purchased their drinks and were seated at a table. As the 4th woman arrived, she had not yet taken her purse from her shoulder when the manager was at the table to "warn" them that there were special people at the restaurant and they could not get loud. He further stated he had had trouble in the past with others like them. Now, only 1 of these women, the birthday girl, had been to El Cancun. The other 3 were not from Rock Hill and had never been to El Cancun. The manager, although other parties were there and they were loud, these were the only women he warned. It upset the patrons in the booth behind them (who were caucasian) and heard the comments. It upset their waitress who sat with them and apologized for the manager's behavior. Now, the birthday girl had been with me and 2 of our friends there just last week. No one warned us to keep it down when we arrived. No one told us they had had problems with others in the past. Difference in the group, there were 3 caucasian women and 1 african american that night. I normally wouldn't say anything, but this was my friend and this was racial profiling and discrimination and she was hurt as were her friends. This manager ASSUMED they would be loud. They hadn't ordered their food yet. They had only been seated. I will never again eat at El Cancun on Cherry Road because of the way my friends were treated. They have forever lost my business. The owner's son apologized for his manager and offered them a free meal, but a free meal doesn't fix discrimination. They left quietly but hurt as being treated as less than. I, personally am outraged. El Cancun you should be ashamed. There is more to this story than this short post, so understand, this was definitely racial profiling and...
Read moreTonight they don’t deserve any stars! My family and I ate here for my niece’s birthday. About 12 people were in attendance. The service was terrible. There was no problem seating us but when it came to bringing out drinks and food, nothing was done in a timely fashion. When my brother was trying to decide on his drink, she actually said “I don’t have all night . I have other people I need to get to.” My brother is deaf and didn’t hear her. I was at the far end of the table and was freaking livid! My aunt explained to the server why he couldn’t hear her and she slowed down to get his order. The appetizers came out about 5 minutes before the entrees. We ordered Indian dip and spinach dip. No one enjoyed them. They looked and tasted like they had been microwaved. Both dishes were full when we left. The entrees were hot. No one really raved about their meal. We were there for almost two hours and never once received a drink refill. As a matter of fact, after she brought our food, she NEVER came back to the table. The entire staff ignored us. I requested chips, TWICE, to go with my meal, she didn’t bring them. I ended going to get them myself. She didn’t even bring the check. When I asked why did we have to pile up front to pay for our food, she said it was easier because there were so many of us. We had to get our own napkins and to go boxes! This is the absolute worst service I’ve ever received. I used to enjoy going to El Cancun. I will never patronize this establishment again! I didn’t mention my niece’s birthday again because they apparently don’t do anything special for birthdays. I told the hostess and server about it. Do yourself a favor, enjoy Mexican cuisine somewhere else! El Cancun clearly doesn’t appreciate their customers. She definitely didn’t earn the 18% automatic gratuity on the $250+ ticket. Had she done her job, she would’ve received more than that. I told anyone who left money on the table to...
