My husband and I stopped to get a bite here on our way to ninety dessert bar. The seating area for ppl waiting on "to go" orders was so packed we had to step into the dining area, we stood there for about 5 minutes as we watched a young man refill drinks, no one greeted or said a word to us. My husband finally asked the young gentleman if we needed to seat ourselves, and he explained that we had to order at the counter and then we could seat ourselves. After about 25 minutes our food finally came out, when I say I never saw shrimp as flat and over cooked as they were, I could barely stab it with the plastic fork I was given, they were really just the skins of the shrimp. A woman employee (whose title I don't know because we never saw her lift a finger) came from out back and sat down in the dining area loudly repeating how she couldnt wait to get off, the young woman at the register asked her what time they should close the dining area and start putting up chairs. We have dined at smaller establishments but have never heard the workers discussing closing early, and complaining about ppl coming in 30 minutes before closing. My husbands chicken was decent but overly seasoned and salty, the best thing about this place was the sweet tea. I was told by another customer that the other location was better... We won't be back. The inside needs to be touched up with new paint, and...
Read moreAttending some training in Rock Hill, I did a little research to find a good local place to eat. When I'm out of town, I always prefer to find a place the locals enjoy, rather than the typical chain restaurants. Having read the reviews, I settled on The Shrimp Boat for lunch. With a name like that, I had to try the calabash shrimp.
The lady taking my order at the counter was very friendly. I paid her the $9.32 she rang up, added $2.00 for a tip and went to my table. Within just a few minutes, my order arrived. It ended up being a challenge to eat, as the flimsy plastic fork provided literally would not pierce the overcooked shrimp. It was so crispy, I had to scoop them up to eat. The fries were your standard, unremarkable, "diner" crinkle cut fry. I washed it down with the water I ordered... which came in a tiny cup that couldn't have been more than 6 ounces.
In the end, I left less than impressed. After dropping off my food, the waitress never returned. The shrimp was overcooked. I emptied my water in two sips. I don't foresee being back in Rock Hill again, but I would be interested in trying the chicken, as it seems to be their specialty. This meal was mediocre, at best, and certainkly wasn't worth the...
Read moreHaven't been to the Boat in a long time, since moving away. I was excited to see they were all around on a recent visit and popped in for early lunch at around 11:15.
Ordered the shrimp dinner (I know... "Ain't no chicken like Shrimp Boat chicken" but it IS the Shrimp Boat after all...) Apparently they had a large order come in at 9am that they were still working on as I heard them talking about it and even though there was only a few dine-in customers with me it took over 40 minutes to get my food. This made me late for my next appointment - not good.
Once it finally did arrive, the shrimp were a bit overcooked (albeit the portion was HUGE) and the fries were the opposite. The hushpuppies were awesome and like I remember. I also had terrible indigestion a few hours later and into the next day. Odd that it onset hours later but I hadn't eaten anything else prior.
So I'm chalking this one up to a one-off (and an expensive one for $12+tip) but I don't know when my schedule will have be back, so I've got to be bluntly honest with my score.
5 stars for still being there! 3 stars for food quality 1 star for ridiculous wait and potential cause of gut issues.
Generous average of 3...
